Final Fantasy VII Revelation finally lets Vincent and Cid loose, and neither plays like the rest of the party
Square Enix had already promised that Vincent and Cid would stop being spectators. Tokyo Game Show finally shows what that means in practice. Revelation is not simply adding two portraits to the party list: both characters bring combat logic distinctive enough to make an already crowded roster harder to optimize.
The Tokyo Game Show 2026 demo takes place inside the Whirlwind Maze as Cloud's group continues north toward Sephiroth. Cid joins at the beginning of the sequence, bringing the available roster to eight characters.
Traversal is more active than simply walking between encounters. The party shimmies across cliff edges and vaults terrain while black-robed figures continue deeper into the maze under howling winds and aurora-like light.

Vincent effectively carries two combat characters in one body
Vincent alternates between ranged gunplay and transformation. In human form there is no manual aiming requirement: repeated standard shots advance his unique abilities from Blood Moon to Execration and then Retribution, increasing their power as the hit count grows.
Holding guard transforms him into a fast quadrupedal monster built for close-range claw attacks. A dedicated input in beast form can also increase stagger pressure.
The unusual part is that the transformation has no conventional fixed timer. Vincent can stay transformed, but his Chaos level steadily increases and reduces his maximum HP.
The question is therefore not whether the form expires in ten seconds. It is how much survivability the player is willing to trade for sustained aggression.
Cid is built around timing rather than another meter
Cid works differently. His spear favors aerial attacks and wide swings, with several follow-up moves triggered by pressing the standard attack button again when a blue aura appears.
Correct timing can branch into Dragon Spin, Hyper Dive or Ground Pound. It gives his normal strings a small rhythm-game element: the next move depends not only on what the player wants to do, but when the input lands.
Target Spear adds another layer. Cid can charge and fire up to five spears into enemies, then empower attacks such as Skydive and Burst Spiral against marked targets.
Rather than simply recreating a nostalgic Dragoon, Square Enix has built a character who prepares enemies before committing to his strongest aerial offense.
FITS turns classic jobs into combat equipment
Revelation also introduces Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear, or FITS. Four specializations are currently known: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner.
They alter character appearance, but more importantly unlock different capabilities and combat roles. These are not permanent traditional Final Fantasy jobs. FITS sit on top of characters who already retain their individual weapons, abilities and materia.
Cloud was equipped with Summoner FITS in the TGS demo. Activating its command called Ifrit, Shiva, Titan and other summons into battle for a limited period.
Using FITS again while a summon was present triggered Pledge Roar, a high-damage move that consumes HP.
It is another system built around an actual cost rather than a free power button.
Eight fighters does not mean eight active characters
Roster size is becoming one of the final game's more interesting design problems. Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Red XIII, Yuffie, Cait Sith, Vincent and Cid now need to coexist inside the same combat framework.
Revelation allows the controlled character and party composition to be changed freely while exploring. The TGS interface also keeps reserve characters visible instead of treating them as a separate hidden list.
The challenge will be preventing Vincent and Cid from becoming characters players experiment with briefly before returning to a familiar trio. FITS may help by redistributing battlefield roles and creating more reasons to alter party composition for different encounters.
Jenova Death stress-tests the expanded toolkit
The demo ends with Jenova Death. The boss uses wide-area fire attacks before growing tentacles that shield its main body from damage.
Those limbs have to be destroyed before the party can resume attacking the core. Later in the encounter, the tentacles begin projecting flames themselves.
PlayStation's session ended by combining Synergy Abilities and Limit Breaks, precisely the Rebirth systems that Revelation now has to make room for alongside Vincent, Cid and FITS.
April 8 is a simultaneous launch this time
Unlike the first two entries in the remake project, Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch across all announced platforms on the same day.
The worldwide release is set for April 8, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
The complete game expands exploration to the entire planet through the Highwind, parachute drops and a grappling gun, while certain quests can be assigned to different party members.
The TGS build is a much narrower slice of that scale. For evaluating combat, that is useful. Vincent and Cid do not need the Highwind to prove that Revelation has already added two more difficult choices to the party menu.
