Final Fantasy VII Revelation is finally playable in public, and the Highwind changes the scale of the world
Rebirth opened Final Fantasy VII up. Revelation wants to remove the ceiling entirely. Square Enix is bringing the third game to Tokyo Game Show as a public playable demo, with the Highwind functioning as an actual exploration tool rather than a cinematic bridge between maps.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is playable at Tokyo Game Show 2026 from September 17 through September 21. Square Enix describes the event as the game's first public hands-on opportunity ahead of its April 8, 2027 release.
It launches simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
The Highwind is no longer just transportation between scenes
Revelation's biggest structural change is how freely the world can be crossed. The Highwind lets players fly across the planet, choose where to approach and leave the airship to reach the ground.
Pre-TGS demonstrations have already shown players ignoring the suggested destination and heading toward previously visited regions instead.
That changes the scale of exploration more meaningfully than simply stitching another collection of large maps together.

Square Enix knows Rebirth sometimes felt too full
Director Naoki Hamaguchi has acknowledged that some players found Rebirth's enormous amount of optional content overwhelming. Revelation is nevertheless designed to be even larger.
The team's answer is more selective reward design and clearer freedom rather than simply cutting activities.
Combat content is intended to feed combat progression, while minigames can provide rewards specific to those activities instead of making every diversion feel mandatory.
Cid and Vincent finally become full combatants
Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine are fully playable in Revelation.
Cid uses a lance with broad sweeps and focused strikes, while Vincent mixes firearms with the monstrous transformations long associated with his character.

Their arrival also widens party construction, with Square Enix emphasizing different roles, abilities and combinations across the complete cast.
FITS add job-like specialisation without replacing character identity
Revelation introduces FITS, outfits that grant additional abilities and class-inspired specialisations.
A character can therefore gain tools outside the normal boundaries of their base combat style. Black Mage and Summoner variants have already been demonstrated.
The development team also changed the progression so the full party can gain access to the available FITS relatively early instead of forcing every character to unlock the same systems separately.
TGS is finally putting the promise in players' hands
Square Enix is running the Revelation demo throughout the show, while the game is also present at several partner booths.
A separate photo attraction places visitors on the Hardy-Daytona opposite Diamond Weapon. It should not be confused with the playable demo itself, but it does reinforce how prominently the Weapons feature in the final game's imagery.
Square Enix has repeatedly described Revelation as both the conclusion of the trilogy and its largest entry. Tokyo Game Show is the first time the public can directly test what that larger scale actually feels like.
