GTA VI: Hurricanes, 170 animal species, and Game Informer's deep dive into Leonida

We already knew about the sunshine, beaches, and neon. Rockstar is now revealing what happens when Leonida's skies become considerably less welcoming. In its new GTA VI cover story, Game Informer shares fresh details obtained directly from Rockstar developers, including hurricanes, localized weather, and more than 170 animal species.

GTA 6 now has a $399.99 Collector’s Box, and the game is not included

GTA VI finally has the kind of giant collectible box usually associated with a blockbuster launch, but Rockstar has separated it completely from the game itself. The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection costs $399.99 in the US, contains eleven physical items inspired by Leonida and Macca the Gator, and explicitly does not include Grand Theft Auto VI.

GTA VI already shows enough side activities to make players forget the missions for hours

The problem with an enormous open world is not simply how many miles it covers. Players still need reasons to stop moving toward the next objective. With GTA VI, Rockstar is finally showing how Leonida fills the space between missions: sports, training, vehicles, exploration and strange local distractions capable of pulling Jason or Lucia away from whatever robbery they were supposed to be planning.

GTA VI lets Jason and Lucia explore Leonida together — or head off on their own

Jason and Lucia are not simply two characters GTA VI allows players to switch between. Rockstar is building its open world around their ability to be together or apart. They can head toward a job in the same vehicle, perform different roles during the same crime, and then leave their partner behind to create their own trouble elsewhere in Leonida.

  • GTA VI wants switching between Jason and Lucia to change your role, not just your location

GTA VI wants switching between Jason and Lucia to change your role, not just your location

Character switching was one of GTA V's defining ideas, but it often changed location as much as protagonist. GTA VI is showing something different. Jason and Lucia can share a mission, perform separate jobs inside the same situation, continue acting when they are not directly controlled and become playable again when the action shifts toward them. The getaway with Raul Bautista is the clearest example yet.

  • GTA VI finally shows what Jason and Lucia can do at home between robberies

GTA VI finally shows what Jason and Lucia can do at home between robberies

Rockstar did not need a shootout to demonstrate one of GTA VI's more intriguing changes. Jason simply waits for Lucia in their apartment. He opens the refrigerator, grabs a beer, asks her to hurry up and eventually sits in front of the television. These deliberately mundane moments suggest that the time between major missions may finally become meaningful play rather than empty transition.

GTA VI's social media won't just be another joke hidden on a phone screen

GTA V already had an internet, Lifeinvader and a phone full of applications. GTA VI appears interested in removing the boundary between that digital world and the street. Rockstar now confirms that Jason and Lucia can browse working social feeds, while the Extended Look shows an event caused by the player being broadcast to fictional viewers as it happens.

GTA VI isn't just putting Leonida beside the water — Rockstar wants us exploring through it

In GTA V, the ocean surrounded Los Santos but often felt like the boundary of what players actually wanted to do. GTA VI appears to approach the problem from the opposite direction. Leonida is built around beaches, islands, canals, mangroves and wetlands, and Rockstar's Extended Look fills those spaces with enough forms of traversal to make leaving the road look worthwhile.

GTA VI wants every neighborhood to be recognizable by the people who live there

An open world can distinguish neighborhoods by changing buildings, cars and vegetation. GTA VI is attempting something more difficult: when Jason or Lucia move across Leonida, Rockstar wants the population itself to tell them where they are. New production tools were created to vary bodies, clothing and appearance according to location and social context.

Race drivers, street artists and a pedestrian studio: the enormous machine behind GTA VI

The scale of GTA VI is easiest to understand through the jobs most players will never think about. Rockstar has an LA branch working almost exclusively on pedestrians. Actual racing drivers contribute to vehicle handling. More than 50 street artists helped create Vice City murals. A Miami research team has spent years talking to the people whose lives will eventually be exaggerated into Grand Theft Auto.
