GTA VI: Hurricanes, 170 animal species, and Game Informer's deep dive into Leonida
We already knew about the sunshine, beaches, and neon. Rockstar is now revealing what happens when Leonida's skies become considerably less welcoming. In its new GTA VI cover story, Game Informer shares fresh details obtained directly from Rockstar developers, including hurricanes, localized weather, and more than 170 animal species.
Leonida will not be permanently sunny
GTA VI's version of Florida will have weather considerably more ambitious than a simple switch between sunshine and rain. Rockstar confirmed to Game Informer that dynamic cloudscapes and weather phenomena can move across Leonida.
Rainfall can be localized. Players may stand in a dry, sunny location while seeing a storm pouring down in the distance. Travel there after the storm has passed and evidence of the weather can remain, including puddles and wet surfaces.
The system can even produce rainbows when the lighting and weather conditions align. That may sound purely decorative, but it illustrates the broader approach: weather can leave visible traces in the environment rather than simply applying a wet filter across the entire map.
And yes, there are hurricanes
More significantly, Game Informer confirms that Leonida can experience tropical storms and hurricanes. The inclusion fits Rockstar's stated ambition to reproduce Florida's natural characteristics alongside its culture.
One important detail remains unknown. Game Informer says it does not yet know how frequently these major events occur or exactly how they affect gameplay and the story. Their presence is confirmed; their broader mechanical consequences are not.
That distinction matters. A spectacular storm in the environment does not automatically mean a system capable of permanently changing traffic, missions, or world physics. Rockstar has not yet described those consequences.

More than 170 species across land, air, and sea
Leonida will also contain considerably more life than a city full of drivers waiting to have their cars stolen. Rockstar says GTA VI features more than 170 animal species distributed across terrestrial, aerial, and aquatic environments.
Game Informer names familiar Florida wildlife including flamingos, manatees, pelicans, and alligators. The roster also includes invasive species found in the real state, with green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, and rhesus macaques among the examples revealed.
Rockstar is building on some of its work from the Red Dead Redemption series. Animals can display visual properties including iridescence, bioluminescence, and translucency, while feathers, hair, and fur benefit from new systems.
Certain creatures can also be tracked and are categorized as Rare, Discoverable, or Legendary. Game Informer notes that Rockstar is keeping the identities of these more elusive animals secret for now.
Florida as raw material, not merely scenery
The 14-page cover story is based on interviews with several Rockstar leads and focuses heavily on the creation of Leonida. Game Informer says the studio researched Miami and Florida with the aim of reproducing their cultural identity as well as their natural environment.
That effort also extends to the human population. The main feature notes that NPCs display more varied body types and distinctive physical characteristics. It is another part of the same objective: making Leonida recognizable through its inhabitants and ecosystems rather than relying solely on familiar landmarks.
Game Informer accompanies the feature with twelve exclusive screenshots and original cover artwork created by Rockstar featuring Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Images focused on the environment include a wetland crowded with birds and other wildlife, while another shows a large storm system and lightning approaching the coast.
Seven weeks until Vice City
None of these revelations changes the game's schedule. Rockstar still officially lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Game Informer's feature instead provides a closer look at a less immediately flashy side of GTA VI. Between the robberies, cars, and Vice City nightlife, Rockstar clearly wants Leonida to function as a natural environment detailed enough for its weather and wildlife to exist beyond Jason and Lucia's criminal activities.
The remaining question is how noticeable all of these systems will be during ordinary play. One thing, however, is now established: when GTA VI promises its own version of Florida, the specification also includes alligators, invasive monkeys, and the possibility of a hurricane ruining an otherwise lovely day in Vice City.
