Kernel Hearts launches today with four magical girls, 256KB of upgrades and a god to kill
Some indie studios start with a small puzzle game. EPHEMERA decided its first release should send four android magical girls up the Tower of Babel to kill God. Kernel Hearts launches September 17 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2 with a roguelike loop built around fast combos, transformations and persistent upgrades.
Kernel Hearts launches September 17, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is the debut title from Argentinian developer EPHEMERA.
The premise goes big immediately. Humanity is close to extinction, the world is drowning in ash, and the M.A.H.O.U Unit must climb the Tower of Babel while eliminating the angelic creatures protecting it.
At the top sits the final objective: dethrone God.
The build changes the combo system, not just the numbers
Temporary abilities collected during a run can modify attacks, spells and movement. EPHEMERA wants those pieces to be combined into custom sequences rather than functioning purely as passive stat increases.
All four members of M.A.H.O.U have distinct combat identities. Runs can be tackled solo or cooperatively with up to three other players.
Each celestial domain ends with a guardian battle, while spending too long on a floor causes the Tower's curse to draw increasingly dangerous enemies into the fight.

Death restores an earlier memory backup
Kernel Hearts gives the roguelike reset a suitably synthetic explanation. When an expedition fails, the Unit returns to its latest memory backup at a laboratory near humanity's final refuge.
Resources recovered from previous attempts can then be invested in persistent MAHOU.OS chips. Each Unit can equip up to 256KB of those upgrades.
Character building is therefore, quite literally, a storage problem.
Magical transformations are also a pressure-release system
Energy taken from the Tower can temporarily unlock a Unit's full magical form. Transforming unleashes a powerful attack and provides a short burst of enhanced combat capability.
It also interacts with the curse system. Remaining in one area for too long increases the threat level, so deciding when to spend that accumulated power becomes part of each climb.
Returning to base means more than changing equipment
Between expeditions, players spend time in Babel among the survivors gathered around the Tower. Characters encountered across its domains can be befriended through conversations and gifts, with some relationships able to develop into romance.
That gives failed runs a social rhythm as well as a mechanical one. The temporary build disappears, but the game does not simply dump the player back into a loadout screen.
EPHEMERA kept changing the game right up to launch
Feedback from the public demo led to substantial combat and economy rebalancing. Its final pre-release update also added Japanese voice acting, sharper UI work and revised enemy visual effects.
The studio also reported significant performance improvements for lower-end PCs during the last optimisation phase.
Kernel Hearts is available now on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
