Modern Warfare 4 turns Price into a fugitive and sends Ghost after him

Modern Warfare 4 is not simply putting Task Force 141 back on a transport plane with another target package. The unit is broken. Price is an outlaw, Ghost is questioning what he has become, Gaz has been ordered to help bring him in, and Valeria Garza has somehow become one of the few allies left on the board.

Infinity Ward used Tokyo Game Show to release a new trailer focused entirely on the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign, clarifying how its story will be divided when the game launches October 23, 2026.

Two conflicts run in parallel. In the game's fictional scenario, North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea. Half a world away, John Price is fighting his own private war after breaking with the organization he once led.

Price crossed a line that Ghost and Gaz are no longer willing to ignore

The fracture comes directly from Modern Warfare III. After Price assassinated General Shepherd, Task Force 141 was disbanded and its former captain went off the grid.

Modern Warfare 4 turns that consequence into a central campaign conflict. Ghost openly questions Price's methods, while Ghost and Gaz have been tasked with capturing or killing their former commander.

Kate Laswell remains in contact with Price, but even that relationship is becoming less comfortable. Infinity Ward frames the CIA station chief as another former ally increasingly uncertain about how far Price is prepared to go.

With 141 gone, Valeria becomes a usable ally

Price has to find help somewhere else. That means working with Valeria Garza, also known as El Sin Nombre, the Las Almas cartel leader who served as a major adversary in Modern Warfare II.

The campaign is not presenting this as friendship. It is a temporary calculation: old rivalries matter less when a larger threat is moving into position.

That gives the sequel a more interesting starting point than another automatic Task Force 141 reunion. Its established characters begin the game disagreeing about where covert action ends and personal vengeance begins.

The other side of the campaign is a conventional invasion

In South Korea, players will follow Private Park Hyun Jun and his squad as they fight against the invasion. Infinity Ward has described joint US and South Korean ground operations as well as an amphibious assault.

The official game overview also points to positional warfare in Korea, close-quarters fighting in New York, high-speed chases through Paris, nighttime SAS raids in Mumbai and large urban assaults to retake occupied territory.

That suggests a campaign moving through heavily authored military set pieces rather than remaining inside one open battlefield. The narrative challenge is connecting those conventional operations to Price's much less conventional hunt.

The Archer is still more threat than character

The trailer's third major thread concerns an unknown weapon being transported to an enemy identified only as “The Archer.”

Infinity Ward has not revealed what the weapon actually does or what the Archer ultimately wants. The official framing is deliberately broad: if the delivery succeeds, it could alter the global balance of power.

For now, the object is functioning as the thing that connects multiple conflicts rather than a mystery the trailer intends to solve.

Campaign players can start a week early

Players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase either the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition receive Campaign Early Access beginning October 16.

That offer covers PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2.

The full game follows October 23 with Campaign, Multiplayer and the new DMZ experience. Infinity Ward leads development, with Beenox partnering on PC and Digital Legends working with Infinity Ward on the native Nintendo Switch 2 version.

Modern Warfare 4 still has time to explain who the Archer really is. Price has the more immediate problem: the people hunting him already know exactly how he operates.
