Marathon widens its scope as Bungie maps out permanent PvE and a March 2027 overhaul
Bungie is putting dates behind its plan to make Marathon broader than a single extraction loop. An October reset comes first, permanent PvE follows with Symbiosis on December 8, and a much larger March 2027 update is planned to deepen progression while connecting PvE, PvP and PvPvE more closely.
October is the reset before the expansion
The nearest change arrives October 6. Bungie plans to reset progression and the in-game economy, refresh rewards and ship a smaller set of quality-of-life and live-tuning changes. Vault Breaker will return for a limited period as well, giving the studio another opportunity to collect data around PvE-focused play.
Some of the work once expected in a larger September update has instead been moved into Symbiosis. Bungie has also said it is stepping away from a strict seasonal schedule, giving individual updates more room to grow around the work that is actually ready rather than forcing everything into a fixed cadence.
Symbiosis gives Marathon a permanent PvE lane
December 8 is where the structure changes more visibly. Symbiosis is set to introduce Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience alongside a refreshed and expanded Perimeter, a new Runner shell, improved onboarding and a social space that includes a firing range.
An experimental Team Deathmatch mode is also planned. Taken together, those additions point toward multiple ways of engaging with the same movement, combat and progression systems. Bungie is not announcing the removal of the existing PvPvE extraction experience; that high-pressure format remains part of the game.
Permanent PvE matters because removing hostile players changes more than the enemy roster. It changes the level of risk a session can demand. Cooperative groups can engage with Marathon’s combat and survival systems without every run also carrying the possibility of another squad turning up at the worst possible moment.
The bigger redesign is scheduled for March
Bungie describes Symbiosis as an early step rather than the destination. Its March 2027 plan includes permanent PvE, PvP and PvPvE experiences that are more directly interconnected, another pass on onboarding, a refactored Cradle and deeper Runner shell progression.
More focused questlines and narrative material are planned alongside new alien combatants and an entirely new zone. The stated goal is a deeper survival game with several levels of challenge and several ways to participate, while retaining the competitive PvPvE tension that currently defines Marathon for players who want it.
March remains a roadmap commitment rather than a live feature set. The details can still change before release, and none of those additions should be treated as already available. What has changed is how explicitly Bungie is describing the destination.
The roadmap follows Bungie’s admission that the game needs to change
On September 17, Bungie acknowledged that Marathon had not reached as many players as the studio had hoped. It also said the game needed to evolve beyond some of the genre constraints around it, while preserving the qualities Bungie considers central to Marathon.
The September 24 roadmap now divides that response into concrete stages. October tackles progression and rewards. December establishes permanent PvE and widens the activity mix. March is intended to connect those pieces into a broader survival framework with deeper progression, additional narrative material, new enemies and another zone. Symbiosis on December 8 is the first major test of that direction.
