HR: Human Remains Found Something Worse Than the Apocalypse: Going Back to Work
Apparently even the end of the world could not kill bureaucracy. HR: Human Remains casts the player as an ordinary employee after demons have defeated humanity. Keeping a survival ticket means working, satisfying management and learning the rules of a society where a demonic corporation has replaced much of the old order. Developed by dennisCorner and published by Black Lantern Collective, the game is dated September 28, 2026 on Steam.
Humanity lost. HR is doing just fine
HR: Human Remains begins with a premise that becomes unpleasant very quickly. Demons won the war. The remaining humans are eaten, sacrificed or enslaved, and those hoping for slightly better odds still need to earn a living. The protagonist has managed to become an employee of the major demonic corporation operating within this new order.
The job is not merely background decoration. A superior assigns tasks and the employee has to complete them to retain a survival ticket. Obedience can bring rewards; failure or disobedience carries consequences. Very ordinary corporate language is consequently applied to a workplace where a bad performance review may have somewhat more permanent consequences than an awkward meeting with human resources.
An employee instead of a hero
That perspective gives the game much of its identity. The protagonist is not introduced as a warrior destined to reclaim the planet, but as an employee initially trying to remain useful. Exploration takes place in first person across offices, industrial facilities and urban spaces reshaped by demonic rule.
Assignments from management sit alongside puzzles, conversations with humans and demons, and the search for hidden information. Items found along the way can also be used to decorate the break room. Even with humanity approaching extinction, workplace customization has somehow survived.
Obedience is only one option
The corporation is more than a backdrop for increasingly unpleasant errands. Players can demonstrate their usefulness and accommodate the new regime, but HR: Human Remains also allows them to work against the demons from inside the organization. Decisions are intended to have consequences and lead to multiple endings.
That choice gives the premise somewhere to go beyond a single joke about office life. Obedience is a survival mechanic, but it also becomes a decision. A sufficiently compliant employee may pursue the security promised by management; another can use the same position to gather information, investigate hidden locations and attempt to influence what happens next.
The world eventually extends beyond the office
Development gradually expanded the setting beyond its initial building. In 2025, dennisCorner described work on a chapter that would take the player outside and show how society functions beyond the workplace. By April 2026, Chapter 2 was complete and described as the game's largest chapter, with work then moving to a shorter third chapter.
A closed playtest held in the spring provided access to a small portion of Chapter 2, including a city location. According to the developer, nearly 500 participants joined the two-week test, with some of their feedback and bug reports subsequently incorporated into the full game.
The release moved back by one week
The schedule changed once more before launch. On August 5, dennisCorner initially announced September 22 as the release date. On August 27, with the game's content declared complete and work focused on localization, final playtesting, Steam integration and polish, the launch was moved to September 28. The developer cited the number of other games arriving around the original date as part of that decision.
Localization continued into the final stretch. A September 19 demo update added French alongside several additional languages. The full Steam page now lists 18 languages for its interface and subtitles.
The demo remains available ahead of the unlock
Steam lists HR: Human Remains as a single-player Action, Adventure and Indie title with achievements, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. Its stated minimum requirements include 4 GB of RAM, a GTX 780 and 3 GB of storage.
At the time of verification, Steam associated the game with September 28, 2026 but still stated that the full version was not yet available. The launch date is therefore confirmed and the developer has declared the game's content complete, without prematurely treating a scheduled release as availability already observed. The demo itself remains downloadable on Steam.
