Godreaper Finally Shows Its Combat, and Killing an Enemy Starts With Breaking Through Its Armor

Godreaper already had corrupted gods, a doomed homeland and a suitably imposing Slavic warrior. What it had not shown clearly was the machinery underneath all that atmosphere. Its first substantial gameplay trailer finally starts with the part players will actually have to solve: enemy defenses.

NextGenium released new Godreaper footage on September 5 and opened applications for a closed Steam playtest.

The third-person single-player action-adventure remains scheduled for Windows in 2027.

Armor has to be dismantled before damage becomes simple

Enemies are built around layered protection rather than one universal defensive state. The developer says different opponents require different weapons, damage types and approaches before their armor breaks.

Zaremire also carries a shield for parries and space control, while accessories, statistics and upgrade trees provide broader character customisation.

God of War and Elden Ring are explicit influences, but the armor system is where Godreaper can create a more specific identity. A large arsenal matters much more when enemies actually force the player to reconsider which part of it solves the current problem.

Some weapons are supposed to fight without being held

Three categories of levitating weapons are described as possessing souls and behaviour of their own.

They can move away from Zaremire, distract enemies and pressure a fight from another angle. That potentially makes them closer to secondary combatants than elaborate projectiles.

The upcoming playtest will not contain their full progression system, so this part of the build is explicitly unfinished.

Elemental abilities alter routes as well as fights

Godreaper calls its elemental system Incandescence. Fire, frost and lightning can be used against enemies, but NextGenium is also building environmental interactions around them.

Frost can put out fires. Electricity can help players move through darkness. Flames can destroy Navi growths blocking a route.

That gives character progression a physical role in the world rather than keeping every upgrade inside combat statistics.

The closed test contains more than four hours of the first act

Selected players will move from the Damp Dungeon through the Ancient Bridge of the Volots and into the citadel of Naven.

NextGenium lists more than ten regular enemy types, two bosses and three side quests across the vertical slice.

Several systems will still be absent: a second primary weapon set, full progression for levitating weapons, parts of Incandescence, the world map, bestiary, final UI and some major cinematics.

That makes the test useful precisely because it is not pretending to be a finished consumer demo. The combat loop is being exposed while enough surrounding systems remain visibly in development.

The mythology has to carry more than the scenery

Zaremire is a bogatyr drawn from East Slavic heroic tradition. In Godreaper, an unknown corruption has reached the roots of the World Tree and driven the gods themselves into madness.

Creatures from Navi occupy ruined settlements while another military threat advances from the east. Zaremire's larger journey involves finding his family, discovering who poisoned the World Tree and rebuilding the brotherhood of the Bogatyrs.

Godreaper is planned for Windows in 2027. Closed playtest applications are now available through Steam.
