FC Mobile 27 is doing more than updating squads: Game Plans and Gauntlet put actual decisions back into matches
EA SPORTS FC Mobile moves into its 27 season on September 24. Beyond updated squads and the game's third-anniversary celebration, Electronic Arts is introducing two systems with a much clearer effect on how matches are played: Game Plans lets teams change shape and mentality during a match, while Gauntlet makes squad depth matter by limiting how often individual player items can be used.
Game Plans solves a fairly obvious limitation. A lineup no longer has to remain tied to the structure selected before kickoff. Players can prepare combinations of formations and mentalities and switch between them during a match.
Five mentalities are documented: Ultra Defensive, Defensive, Balanced, Attacking and Ultra Attacking. Chasing a goal can therefore mean changing both shape and team behavior without leaving the match, while protecting a lead can push the same squad in the opposite direction.
The mentality changes go beyond a label
EA says mentalities affect elements including team commitment and risk, pressing, defensive baseline, attacking runs and team width. Switching to an attacking plan is therefore meant to alter collective behavior rather than simply replace one formation diagram with another.

EA's own documentation currently contains one detail that should not be artificially reconciled. The September Game Plans Deep Dive says squads can combine formations and mentalities into up to five Game Plans. The earlier Limited Beta documentation and the current app listing describe four custom Game Plans. The system itself is confirmed; EA's published materials simply do not use a single number for the preset count.
The feature was tested during the Limited Beta that ran from August 25 through September 13. EA listed supported contexts including Head to Head, Manager Mode, PvE matches and Custom Team matches during that test.
Gauntlet makes squad depth a resource
Gauntlet creates a different problem. Instead of asking only how strong a starting eleven is, it asks how long that eleven can be kept together.
Player items receive limited appearances during a run. EA's September 23 Deep Dive says winning a match removes one appearance from each player who was on the field, and a player becomes unavailable for selection once those appearances are exhausted.
That makes roster rotation part of the mode rather than an optional bit of housekeeping. Spending every elite card early may make one match comfortable and the next several much harder.
House Rules can rewrite the match itself
Gauntlet rounds contain their own Objectives, Traits and gameplay modifiers. Some can adjust attributes such as passing speed, shot speed or stamina for particular positions.
House Rules make larger changes. Hot Zone awards additional points for goals from marked areas. Position Hero rewards goals from specified positions. No Rules switches off fouls and offsides entirely.
A match can offer up to three Stars through its Objectives. Mandatory tasks are used to progress, while optional ones provide additional Stars toward reward tiers.
Matches can also be reset and replayed. EA says spent appearances are refunded when this happens while previously earned Stars are retained, preventing one failed attempt from automatically wrecking the rest of a run.
Two PlayStyles make the final update listing
The Limited Beta tested four additional PlayStyles. The current season-update listing on Apple's App Store specifically highlights two for the released version: Incisive Through Pass and Dead Ball.
Incisive Through Pass improves target selection and lead distance on through balls. Dead Ball adds more curl, pace, dip and precision to free kicks.
The same listing also describes an overall visual refresh, new signature celebrations and localized match commentary in Mexican Spanish, Indonesian and Thai.
September 24 does not mean every storefront is showing the same status yet
Electronic Arts officially scheduled the FC Mobile 27 Season Update for September 24 alongside the third-anniversary celebration. Version 28.0.01 is now listed on Apple's App Store with the new season features in its release notes.
At the same point in our verification, Google's Play Store event page for the 27 Season Update still labels it “Available soon.” That makes a blanket claim that the Android rollout is already complete inappropriate for now.
The broader design direction is much easier to pin down. FC Mobile 27 is asking for more decisions before and during a match: which shape to switch into, how aggressive the team should become, which players to preserve for later Gauntlet rounds. For an annual football-game update, those systems matter considerably more than simply adding another layer of higher-rated cards.
