Dune: Awakening is coming to consoles with a full solo mode and a year's worth of changes

Console players are not simply receiving the June 2025 PC build with controller support attached. Funcom is treating Dune: Awakening's PS5 and Xbox launch as another major version of the game, complete with its full solo experience, the end of Book One and more than a year of accumulated revisions.

Dune: Awakening is coming to consoles with a full solo mode and a year's worth of changes

Dune: Awakening launches for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 22. Gamescom marks the first public hands-on opportunity for the PS5 edition, accompanied by seven minutes of footage captured on PS5 Pro.

Single-player changes the rules of Arrakis

Funcom says the entire game can now be played solo, including the open world, story, crafting systems and Deep Desert.

That mode has its own adjustments rather than merely placing one person on an empty multiplayer server. Three preset difficulty settings are available alongside manual options affecting combat, XP and harvesting.

Deep Desert bases are not wiped on the weekly schedule used by official multiplayer servers. Coriolis storms remain part of the environment but are less destructive, while Landsraad competition simulates other participants so the faction system can continue without human rivals.

Console players start with the completed first story arc

September's update also delivers the finale of Book One. New players can therefore move from the opening sequence through the complete first major story arc immediately.

Funcom says console versions will contain more than a year of additions and improvements developed for PC.

That includes a multiplayer structure where PvP is now optional throughout the game. Players who want higher-risk competition can still enter dedicated PvP areas, while those interested only in PvE no longer have to treat the Deep Desert as mandatory hostile territory.

Broad cross-play is still a post-launch feature

Funcom has finally confirmed that PC-console cross-play is coming, but it will not be ready for September 22.

The studio has not attached a release date to the feature.

That broader plan should not be confused with Xbox Play Anywhere. Xbox and Windows Store users already sit inside Microsoft's own shared ecosystem; the Gamescom announcement concerns the larger bridge between Dune: Awakening's platform populations.

Xbox gets a particularly low-friction entry point

Dune: Awakening joins Xbox Game Pass on launch day and supports Xbox Play Anywhere.

Deluxe and Ultimate Edition buyers on both Xbox and PlayStation can begin five days earlier on September 17.

A physical PlayStation 5 release is also planned, with Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe handling retail distribution across several territories.

The console release therefore looks less like a late port than a second launch. People arriving in September will meet an Arrakis with a finished first story arc, a genuine solo structure and a year of systems work already behind it.
