Surviving Mars reshapes its colonies as Patch 1.1.0 rebuilds research and services

Surviving Mars: Relaunched has received its most structural update since launch. Released September 8, the free 1.1.0 Services & Science patch replaces the old research model, fundamentally changes how colonist services work and rebalance a substantial part of the colony economy.

Research has been rebuilt

The legacy research system is gone. Research now generates Tech Points, with every Technology costing one point and progression taking place across a spatial hex-based board.

Players can generally unlock only Technologies adjacent to existing progress, while each successive Tech Point requires more Research. Wonder Technologies sit further away, while Breakthrough and Mystery technologies remain separate from the main board.

Around 50 Technologies have been added alongside search, new Initiative entry points and a Wishlist that can automatically unlock selected Technologies when their requirements become available.

Colonists no longer need to physically visit every service

Services now operate as aggregated Dome-wide capacity. Health, Sanity, Comfort and Morale are affected by available service buildings without requiring each colonist to physically visit them.

Effects scale with building performance and available capacity, while spare capacity can be shared with connected Domes.

Comfort and Morale now move gradually toward target values. Most workplaces also drain particular stats each day, meaning researchers, miners and other workers increasingly need different kinds of support.

The economy gets tougher

Stockpiled Food now decays by 4% at the end of every Sol. Concrete and Metal construction costs have risen across multiple buildings, with some Concrete maintenance also becoming more expensive.

Surface Metal deposits were rebalanced, while meteors provide fewer Metals but can now drop Rare Metals and Exotic Minerals.

Comfort bonuses have been extensively retuned as well, preventing the redesigned service model from becoming an easy route to permanently happy Domes.

Rockets and quality-of-life systems also get attention

Rockets gain a more direct workflow with destination selection, refueling controls, return-trip fuel management and export options inside the information panel.

Dome connections are easier to understand, Train Stations interact more predictably with Dome entrances, colonist stat modifiers are clearer, tutorials have been reworked and new events have been introduced.

Old saves come with an important warning

Because 1.1.0 changes so many foundational systems, Haemimont recommends starting a new game.

Steam players who want to finish an existing colony can remain on Patch 1.0.7 through a dedicated branch before moving to the current version.

Feeding the Future launches beside it, but the overhaul itself is free

Patch 1.1.0 arrived alongside Feeding the Future, the first new paid content pack for Relaunched. The DLC adds crops, animals, food buildings, eight Delicacies, colonist traits and new Commander Profiles.

The new Research Board, redesigned Services and most of the systemic changes belong to the free update for base-game owners.

Services & Science therefore undersells itself slightly. This is not merely maintenance for Surviving Mars: two of its long-standing management loops have effectively been replaced.
