Donutal Is Out, and Its Best Interrogation Tool Is Choosing Who Stands Next to the Suspect

Arc System Works released Donutal on PC on September 3. It puts the player in charge of screening extraterrestrial visitors at an International Space Port in 2206, built from what remains of the old International Space Station.

The protagonist is not exactly prepared for the assignment. They have just awakened from 150 years of cryosleep and discovered a substantial debt they do not remember accumulating.

The applicants are evaluated as a group

A screening can involve as many as eight aliens. Their statements are not meant to be read independently: players are asked to compare what each visitor says, whom they defend and where their stories conflict.

Up to two candidates can then be summoned into the inspection room at the same time.

That pairing is part of the system rather than a visual flourish. Arc System Works says answers can change depending on who is present. Lovers, strangers and members of rival species may expose information that would remain hidden in separate interviews.

The puzzle therefore begins before a question is asked. Choosing the right pair can matter as much as choosing the dialogue option.

Information eventually has to become a decision

Visitors arrive for different reasons, including tourism, study, immigration and asylum. Some may also be criminals concealing their intentions.

Earth, meanwhile, has its own problems. Certain extraterrestrial technologies or skills could be valuable, giving the player a reason not to treat every unfamiliar applicant as a threat.

Admission and rejection decisions can have irreversible consequences.

Tomorrow's news reports what today's judgment caused

Each new morning brings news about the previous day's decisions. That gives the consequences a place inside the normal loop rather than reserving everything for a final ending.

It also turns earlier choices into new evidence. A visitor who appeared harmless may look different after the headlines arrive.

The protagonist still needs to repay their unexplained debt and eventually reach Earth. Whether there is a particularly healthy Earth waiting by then depends on the screenings.

Conversation is the mechanical hook

Steam categorises Donutal as adventure, simulation and interactive fiction, which is a useful description of its unusual middle ground. It has a bureaucratic premise without making document processing its defining interaction.

The launch price is $9.99. An early-purchase package also includes a 13-track original soundtrack for a limited period.

Most inspectors get a stamp. This one gets suspicious couples and interspecies grudges.
