Ascendance is bringing Khezu back to Monster Hunter Wilds, but its bigger change is happening inside the combos
Khezu is back. Yes, that means the pale hide, impossible neck and electric screaming are coming with it. After several days of Tokyo Game Show reveals, though, an old monster returning may not be the most important thing happening in Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance. The bigger change is attached to the hunter's arm.
Capcom confirmed on September 19 that Khezu will appear in Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance. The reveal came during a stage event at the company's Tokyo Game Show 2026 booth, following the expansion's first public hands-on sessions.
Khezu joins a growing collection of returning and new threats. Teostra has now been confirmed for Ascendance as well, while the colossal Lao-Shan Lung is directly tied to the opening of the new story.
Araketa shows what Master Rank wants players to process
The TGS demo contained three quest types featuring Chatacabra, Teostra and a boss variant of Araketa inside the new Skybound Eyrie.

Araketa is a Bird Wyvern capable of using powerful air currents generated by its wings to travel at high speed. The more interesting part of the fight is its pack behavior.
The leader issues commands through distinctive calls, sending other Araketa into consecutive attacks before the whole pack rises into the air and performs a synchronized high-speed dive.
Its roar also creates a tactical opening. The boss exposes a throat weak point while giving orders, allowing a well-timed Focus Strike to interrupt the pack command entirely.
That creates a hunt where reading the group matters almost as much as tracking the main target.
The Boost Bracer is not replacing weapon identities
Ascendance's central new combat system is Boost Action, enabled through equipment called the Boost Bracer. It gives all fourteen weapon types additional weapon-specific actions.
The gauge fills gradually over time and through successful attacks. Activating it creates a temporary Boost state that enhances selected weapon properties and opens additional attacks, movement or combo opportunities.
The important part is where those actions fit. Boost can be triggered during existing combinations or immediately after attacks that would normally leave the hunter exposed, letting players keep pressure on the monster without resetting their offense.
Breaking a wound with a Focus Strike while Boost is active replenishes the gauge as it drains. Skilled play can therefore extend the enhanced phase instead of treating it as a fixed-duration damage button.
Sword and Shield turns Boost into offensive movement
The Sword and Shield demonstration makes the design particularly easy to see. Its Boost activation can rapidly close distance, while using it at close range lets the hunter pivot around the monster's flank.
One input can therefore become approach tool, evasive movement and combo continuation depending on positioning.
Capcom appears more interested in amplifying what each weapon already does well than giving every weapon the same universal super move.
Teostra has learned some new tricks too
The demo also included a Teostra hunt in the Oilwell Basin. Familiar charges, flame breath and blast attacks remain, but new patterns have been added.
One has Teostra rear high before smashing both forelegs into the ground. It can rotate while preparing the attack to keep tracking its target, making a simple run toward the flank less reliable.
The move can still be challenged. During the PlayStation hands-on, a Switch Axe Offset Rising Slash successfully deflected the heavy slam back into the Elder Dragon.
The Oilwell Basin creates another complication: thick oil mud can steal crucial movement just as Teostra prepares an explosion.
An old monster does not necessarily mean an old fight.
The story moves the world forward by several years
Ascendance does not begin immediately after Wilds. Lao-Shan Lung suddenly appears in the Forbidden Lands and leaves the Expedition Team unable to stop the destruction.
The story then advances several years. The Expedition builds Madoi Stronghold in preparation for the Elder Dragon's possible return, while Nata grows into a full member of the team.
The mist above Wyveria eventually clears to reveal the Skybound Eyrie, a new region of floating islands, ancient ruins and previously unknown endemic life.
Seikrets can ride updrafts to gain altitude and glide between those landmasses, making the area's verticality part of traversal rather than background scenery.
And now, Khezu
Capcom has not yet explained how Khezu's hunt will be redesigned for Ascendance. Its return is the confirmed part for now.
Whether the electric wyvern receives the same kind of expanded attack set shown with Teostra remains unknown.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance launches in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Players will need the base game, Hunter Rank 40 and completion of the seven-star assignment Awaking From a Dream to begin the expansion and enter Master Rank.
Khezu can stretch its neck as far as it likes. The Boost Bracer is still the part worth watching.
