Could Fallout and Minecraft Become Xbox Exclusives? Microsoft Surveys Players
What if future Fallout or The Elder Scrolls games stopped launching on PlayStation? Microsoft appears to be asking that question to selected Xbox Insider participants. In a report published on October 14, 2026, Windows Central revealed several hypothetical scenarios ranging from timed exclusivity to far-reaching restrictions on future Xbox games. This is a survey, however, not an announcement of a new release policy.
Could Xbox's multiplatform strategy change direction again? Microsoft has spent recent years bringing games from its studios to PlayStation and, in some cases, Nintendo platforms. Yet the company also appears interested in understanding what would encourage customers to choose Xbox hardware.
That is the central subject of an Xbox Research questionnaire reported by Windows Central journalist Jez Corden on October 14.
Corden says the publication received screenshots from a participant and verified their authenticity.
The questions mention several major gaming franchises associated with Microsoft. Some scenarios are unusually restrictive, but they must be interpreted correctly: none constitutes an official announcement of a new exclusivity arrangement.
Fallout, The Elder Scrolls and Minecraft Are Mentioned
According to Windows Central, the questionnaire asks players how they would react if future installments of major franchises became exclusive to Xbox consoles while remaining available on PC.
Fallout and The Elder Scrolls feature among the examples. DOOM, Diablo, Minecraft and PHYSINT are also mentioned in different scenarios.
Participants are asked whether such decisions would encourage them to purchase Xbox hardware, use a console they already own or move to PC.
Another potential response is to skip the games entirely.
The inclusion of these franchises in a questionnaire does not establish that their future releases have become Xbox console exclusives.
An Extreme Hypothetical Scenario for Minecraft
The most dramatic scenario concerns future releases across Xbox-developed franchises.
Under this hypothetical policy, almost every future game from those franchises would become exclusive to Xbox consoles, with Call of Duty excluded.
Minecraft would face an additional restriction. The questionnaire asks players to imagine that existing Minecraft editions would no longer be sold on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles and would stop receiving new content updates there.
Previously purchased games and content would remain accessible, and PC versions would be unaffected.

This is a fictional scenario used in research. Microsoft has not announced the end of Minecraft sales or content support on competing consoles.
There is an important difference between asking consumers how they might react to a change and confirming that the change will actually happen.
Why Is Xbox Revisiting Exclusivity?
Exclusive games have become one of the most contested aspects of Microsoft's gaming strategy.
Releasing games on several consoles can expand their potential audience and generate sales beyond the Xbox ecosystem.
On the other hand, recognizable franchises can give consumers a powerful reason to choose one console over another.
That tension became particularly significant following Microsoft's acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, which placed numerous major franchises under its ownership.
The reported questionnaire appears designed to measure how customers would behave under different exclusivity arrangements.
Some Xbox Exclusives Have Already Been Confirmed
The survey follows actual changes to Microsoft's strategy.
During the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026, Microsoft announced that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution would be Xbox console exclusives.
The company explicitly stated that these were not timed exclusives.
It also said that games already announced for multiple platforms would retain those release plans.
Those are officially communicated decisions. No equivalent confirmation has emerged from the October survey for Fallout, The Elder Scrolls or Minecraft.
Xbox Console Exclusivity Does Not Necessarily Exclude PC
The questionnaire's wording is important because it focuses on console exclusivity.
Games following this model could still launch on PC while avoiding PlayStation and Nintendo consoles.
The most restrictive scenario explicitly states that PC availability would remain unchanged.
That distinction reflects Microsoft's broader gaming ecosystem, which extends beyond dedicated Xbox consoles.
Describing these proposals as a plan to make every Microsoft game playable only on Xbox hardware would therefore be inaccurate.
Could Fallout Really Disappear From PlayStation?
No official announcement currently establishes that a future Fallout game will skip PlayStation.
The questionnaire presents a hypothetical outcome and asks whether it would affect purchasing behavior. It is neither a release schedule nor a statement from Bethesda.

The same principle applies to future The Elder Scrolls installments and other franchises named in the survey.
The interesting question is how far Microsoft could restrict access to its largest properties before customers began changing platforms or abandoning purchases.
For now, two distinct facts remain: Xbox officially confirmed certain console exclusives in June, and Windows Central has reported a new questionnaire exploring additional possibilities.
Neither development establishes new exclusivity plans for Fallout, Minecraft or The Elder Scrolls. Any actual change will require a separate announcement from Microsoft.
