Jordan is travelling across New Mexico in 1992 when his car breaks down. With no mobile phone and no convenient way to call for help, a roadside dinosaur attraction called Dalton's Dinos appears to offer a possible solution.

Instead, he discovers an abandoned tourist trap, a mysterious voice asking for assistance and creatures that have apparently moved beyond their intended roles as harmless prehistoric entertainment.

That is the premise of Terrible Lizards, the debut horror platformer from WDR Studios. Ahead of its October 29 launch, director John W. Gelardi has shared additional details about the game's design on the official PlayStation Blog.

A horror game where movement replaces weapons

The defining feature of Terrible Lizards is its commitment to first-person parkour. Players cannot simply eliminate the creatures pursuing them. According to the official Steam description, conventional combat is not an option.

Survival depends on running, jumping, climbing, sliding, bouncing between surfaces and navigating walls. Movement is not merely a convenient way to travel between encounters; it is the main gameplay system.

Gelardi explains that the team wanted controls inspired by responsive first-person action games. The character reaches a consistent maximum movement speed, allowing players to learn distances and timing through repetition.

Aerial control also allows adjustments after leaving the ground. This is intended to make difficult jumps manageable without removing the challenge of mastering their timing.

The distinction matters because the game asks players to think differently from a conventional survival horror adventure. Instead of managing ammunition or selecting weapons, they must read their surroundings and identify possible escape routes.

The final quality of these mechanics will depend on how reliably they respond during demanding encounters. The developer's explanation establishes the design goals, not an independent assessment of the finished controls.

Why Route 66 makes an effective horror setting

Terrible Lizards draws heavily on the cultural atmosphere of early-1990s America. Small attractions along major highways once offered travellers enormous dinosaur statues, gift shops and dubious prehistoric exhibits.

WDR Studios uses this familiar imagery as the foundation for horror. An oversized mascot that would normally entertain children becomes threatening when encountered inside a deserted building at night.

The setting also supports the game's sense of isolation. In 1992, Jordan cannot rely on a smartphone, modern navigation services or an instant ride home.

His immediate need for assistance drives him into Dalton's Dinos, while the attraction's deserted facilities conceal a much larger mystery.

There is a mystery beneath the attraction

Beyond its parkour challenges, Terrible Lizards includes environmental storytelling and an investigation into what happened to Dalton's family and the missing staff.

Players can collect notes, tapes and recordings while exploring the attraction and the underground areas connected to it.

The environments contain obstacles and locked routes that encourage observation and creative movement. Escaping a monster and finding a path forward are often linked challenges.

A free PC demo launched on September 24 through Steam. It includes portions of the first two levels and provides an opportunity to experience the movement system before purchasing the complete game.

The developer has not established the final campaign length or published a comprehensive breakdown of every creature and level.

A debut project from the creators of JT Music

WDR Studios was founded by creators associated with JT Music, a channel known for music inspired by popular video games.

The studio describes Terrible Lizards as its first original game, drawing on the founders' interest in horror, interactive storytelling and the rhythm of action sequences.

On Steam, the listed publishers are Digital Pajamas and Behaviour Interactive. The game supports French interface text and subtitles on PC, but French voice acting is not listed.

The published minimum PC requirements include 6GB of memory, a GeForce GTX 1050 or Radeon RX 560 and 25GB of available storage.

Terrible Lizards is scheduled for October 29, 2026, on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It remains a promising premise rather than a proven success, but combining movement-driven platforming with dinosaur horror gives WDR Studios a distinctive starting point.
