Stronghold 4 puts seven lords outside your castle and gives them far more walls to break
Stronghold has never needed dragons, a space-age technology tree or ten thousand soldiers to create a crisis. A badly placed wall, hungry peasants and one neighbor with a trebuchet usually do the job. Stronghold 4 is expanding that problem across larger maps, more opponents and castles that should be considerably harder to crack.
Firefly Studios showed a new Stronghold 4 features trailer during the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct on September 20. The game remains scheduled for a 2026 Steam release, beginning in Early Access.
The presentation focused heavily on skirmish play. A match can include the player and up to seven CPU-controlled rivals across 14 battlefields.
Firefly has eight distinct AI lords planned. They are not simply portraits sitting on the same behavior set: each is intended to bring a recognizable personality, castle-building approach and military preference.
Stronghold's exaggerated enemy lords are back at the center
The series has never been especially interested in subtle villains. Stronghold 4 continues that tradition with an intentionally theatrical cast ranging from a threatening gothic noblewoman to aging bureaucrats and petty tyrants who look irritating before the first siege engine has even been built.
Those personalities matter mechanically because different lords are supposed to favor different economies, fortifications and armies.
With as many as seven CPU rivals sharing one skirmish, adapting to a single enemy may no longer be enough. A fortress designed to punish one opponent can expose exactly the weakness another needs.
Stronghold 4 gives players more freedom before destroying their work
The Tokyo trailer shows a much broader range of fortress layouts, from relatively simple timber defenses to layered stone complexes with multiple walls, courtyards and internal routes.

Firefly is expanding both decorative and functional construction pieces while restoring familiar tools including moats and tunnelers.
That mixture remains the reason Stronghold works differently from a conventional RTS. A wall is not merely a defensive statistic. It occupies space, changes movement, consumes resources and has to wrap around an economy that still needs to function.
The most annoying possible fortress is not particularly useful when every baker needs to cross three gates to deliver food.
Weather now reaches directly into the economy and battlefield
Stronghold 4 is also expanding environmental effects. Firefly gives two direct examples: snow can hinder crop growth, while heavy rain reduces archer range.
That makes weather part of both castle management and combat. A bad season can weaken production before the enemy army even reaches the walls.
Army composition is also meant to matter more during large engagements, alongside larger maps, additional military structures and new defensive traps.

The campaign goes backward rather than continuing the timeline
Stronghold 4 is a narrative prequel to the original game. Its 22-mission campaign follows Penryn of Wethel, a shepherd whose life is overturned before he is pushed toward command, military glory and knighthood.
Ben Starr voices Penryn, with Samantha Béart, Walles Hamonde and Harry McEntire also part of the announced cast.
Firefly is returning to medieval England and the atmosphere of the earliest Stronghold games after several entries explored different regions and systems.
Ordinary castle life remains part of that identity. Food, taxes, honor and peasant approval all have to be managed while the walls are being prepared for war.
Early Access already includes the 22 missions and eight CPU lords
The Steam page now gives a clearer breakdown of the initial Early Access build.
The complete 22-mission prequel campaign, full skirmish mode with eight unique CPU opponents, Free Build and a curated Skirmish Trail are planned for that first release.
A playable demo is already available on Steam.
Firefly currently expects Early Access to last around six months, although the studio explicitly says that schedule may change.
Online multiplayer is being held for later development
Several major modes are planned for the road to version 1.0 rather than the initial Early Access launch.
Those include online multiplayer, a cooperative Skirmish Trail and a dedicated economic campaign.
That distinction matters when talking about a 2026 release. Stronghold 4 is still planned to launch this year, but its first public commercial version will remain a work in progress.
Firefly says Early Access will be used to shape updates and remaining features through player feedback.
Fifteen years after Stronghold 3, the numbered sequel returns to the original problem
Stronghold 4 is the first new numbered entry since Stronghold 3 in 2011, even though the wider series has remained active through sequels, spin-offs and remasters.
The number four accompanies a fairly deliberate reset of priorities: medieval England, castle economy, siege warfare, eccentric rival lords and freedom to build are back in the foreground.
Tokyo Direct still did not provide an exact Early Access date. It did make the intended scale of skirmish mode considerably clearer: one player, as many as seven hostile neighbors, and several good reasons to check the northern wall twice.
