Sector 13: Haunted Woods sends four players into a forest that can hear them

Voice chat is normally the sensible part of a co-op horror plan. Sector 13: Haunted Woods turns it into a liability. Players need to communicate while exploring its cursed forest, but the game can use their real voices to expose them to whatever is hunting nearby. Game Inside Studio scheduled the full Steam launch for September 25, just days after its two-person team announced a 30,000-wishlist milestone.

Sector 13 is designed for one to four players exploring an open forest in search of anomalies and forbidden artifacts. The basic assignment sounds almost professional until the woods begin reacting to the people investigating them.

Microphone input is part of that tension. Talking can help a squad coordinate, while making noise can also attract danger. The result is a co-op problem that cannot be solved simply by keeping everyone on voice chat and shouting instructions whenever something goes wrong.

The demo became the testing ground

Game Inside Studio released the demo around February's Steam Next Fest and says the feedback that followed shaped its work on the full version. The studio received bug reports and suggestions while continuing to expand the forest ahead of launch.

Version 1.0 is supposed to contain more than 100 anomalies to discover and investigate. The developers also list additional exploration areas, new artifacts, killer ghosts, puzzles, minigames, achievements and a collection gallery among the additions beyond the demo.

There is a Ghost Counterattack System as well, suggesting that survival is not always limited to running away. Other practical additions include microphone selection and a way to locate teammates. Dance emotes also made the list, because apparently supernatural field investigation still requires morale.

Thirty thousand wishlists for a two-person project

The development story is unusually compact. Game Inside Studio describes itself as a two-developer indie studio from Thailand, and its Steam announcements identify the pair as siblings.

On September 13, the team announced that Sector 13 had passed 20,000 Steam wishlists. Eight days later, that total had crossed 30,000. The developers directly credited demo players, feedback, bug reports and community sharing for helping the project grow.

Wishlist numbers are a measure of pre-release interest rather than a verdict on the finished game, but the pace is notable for a project built by two people. It also gives some context to why the developers spent the months after Next Fest iterating on the demo rather than treating it as a disposable promotional build.

The forest has a surprisingly broad invitation list

Sector 13: Haunted Woods targets Windows and supports both single-player and online co-op. Steam's current metadata lists 17 interface and subtitle languages, including English, French, Thai, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic and Turkish.

Its pitch does not need much more decoration. Find the anomalies, recover the artifacts, keep the squad together and remember that the thing in the woods may be listening to the same conversation as everyone else. For a co-op horror game, making the inevitable scream mechanically inconvenient is a particularly economical idea.
