God of War Laufey has a February date, and Kratos is already waiting behind it
God of War is changing protagonists without quietly retiring its old one. Laufey now has a firm PS5 release date, while Santa Monica Studio is already developing the next chapter that puts Kratos back at the center.
The interesting part of God of War Laufey's release-date announcement is not really the date. February 16, 2027 is useful to put on a calendar, but the San Diego Comic-Con panel also established what kind of game Laufey is supposed to be within the franchise. It is part of an ongoing story rather than an isolated detour.
A Kratos-led God of War is already in development and is expected to connect directly to the events of Faye's adventure. There is no title or release window attached to that project yet.
Santa Monica is making Faye faster
Laufey keeps the close, physical combat associated with the modern games, but Faye is built around a noticeably different rhythm. Santa Monica Studio says her movement is designed to flow between ground and aerial attacks without breaking momentum, borrowing some of the speed associated with the older Greek-era games.
Her Giant magic provides the stranger part of the combat system. Faye's Golden Hand can separate a foe's soul from its body. The soul remains something she can attack and knock around, including into other enemies, creating an additional layer inside combos rather than functioning as a cinematic finisher.

She also gains access to a powerful sword guarded by Rue. The studio's language around the weapon has consistently focused on speed and relentless pressure, which puts a fair amount of distance between Faye's intended feel and Kratos' heavier Norse combat style.
One afterlife means more than one mythology
Faye wakes after death in the Everywhen, a realm positioned above the familiar mortal afterlives. Magic returns there, and gods and creatures from different mythological traditions can occupy the same space.

Sekhmet and Begtse are among the first gods revealed. That premise gives Santa Monica Studio a convenient way to expand beyond Norse mythology without immediately replacing it with another single pantheon.
Faye will also travel with Phranque, a cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid, and Rue, the enchanted guardian of the sword she eventually carries. Deborah Ann Woll returns as Faye.
Laufey is not the end of Kratos' story
The Comic-Con panel also answered a question the reveal naturally created. Kratos remains part of Santa Monica Studio's longer plan, with another game already being developed around him and tied to what happens in Laufey.
Nothing more concrete has been announced for that sequel. God of War Laufey itself launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027.
