Nodusfall is HoYoverse testing whether its identity can survive without the anime look
The easiest thing to notice about Nodusfall is what has disappeared. There is no bright anime presentation tying it immediately to Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail or Zenless Zone Zero. HoYoverse's Gamescom reveal instead opens on a harsh mythological world full of colossal creatures and realistically rendered characters. That makes for an effective trailer. The more consequential experiment may be underneath it.
Nodusfall is a new co-op action game built around Weavers, figures sent into a world where divine authority has collapsed and a mysterious corruption has twisted legendary beings.
HoYoverse calls its setting “multi-mythology,” but the announcement does not frame the game as a crossover between existing mythological celebrities. Eastern legendary beasts and Western dragons are examples of the source material; the world itself has its own cultures, history and divine order.

The boss fight feeds the next boss fight
The first official description gives progression a fairly direct connection to combat. Squads select different Styles and Skill combinations, adjust their approach around the team and maintain pressure until a powerful enemy exposes a weakness.
Defeating those creatures produces resources used to unlock more Skills and weapons. Official material also talks about switching roles and loadouts rather than locking a player into one fixed approach.
There is still plenty missing. HoYoverse has not published a formal class list, complete weapon roster or an official maximum squad size.

A HoYoverse game without a confirmed business model
The studio's history makes monetization an obvious question, but the reveal does not answer it.
Nodusfall has not been announced as free-to-play. It has not been announced as premium either. There is no confirmed gacha system, season pass or store structure. Pre-registration is live, which tells us HoYoverse wants to begin assembling an audience; it does not tell us what that audience will eventually be asked to buy.
That gap matters because the progression currently being advertised revolves around defeating creatures to acquire resources, Skills and weapons. How monetization intersects with that loop is still unknown.
The visual departure is substantial
HoYoverse describes Nodusfall as realistic fantasy. The reveal footage uses Unreal Engine 5, with the trailer explicitly noting that the game remains in development and that what is being shown is not final.
The change is more than a different shader. Faces, materials, landscapes and creatures are being presented with a visual vocabulary much further removed from the cel-shaded games that established HoYoverse's global identity.

That does not automatically make Nodusfall a different kind of HoYoverse game everywhere else. Its storytelling structure, long-term progression, update model and monetization have barely been described.
The announcement ends before the practical questions begin
No platforms have been named. There is no release year or launch window.
The reveal establishes the Weavers, the corrupted mythological creatures, squad combat and a progression loop based on new weapons and Skills. Everything from platform performance to pricing is still waiting for another announcement.
Pre-registration is open now.
