Double Fine Has 26 New Game Ideas and Is Letting Players Decide Which Four Get Built

Double Fine is not announcing one carefully polished future project. It has put 26 unfinished ideas in public, asked people to cut the list down to four, and committed to showing what happens when small teams receive two weeks to make the survivors playable.

Double Fine Has 26 New Game Ideas and Is Letting Players Decide Which Four Get Built

Amnesia Fortnight 2026: Indie Reboot launched on August 31 alongside a Kickstarter campaign and 26 pitches created by people across Double Fine.

The studio has been running versions of Amnesia Fortnight since 2007. Regular production pauses, developers pitch ideas, small teams form around the selected concepts and prototypes are built under a deliberately severe deadline.

For 2026, the audience gets considerably more control over what survives.

Only four ideas enter production

The opening vote narrows the 26 pitches down to four finalists. Development is scheduled to begin on September 9 and run through September 23.

Eligible backers will receive the resulting playable prototypes after the jam and another vote will decide the overall winner.

One additional step changes the stakes: Double Fine intends to continue developing that winning prototype into a small commercial game.

The pitch list is deliberately difficult to standardise

Architactics, pitched by Asif Siddiky, is a tactical city-builder where structures can move like giant robots and fight environmental monsters. Roads and zoning also determine how units spawn and move.

Oliver Franzke's Fermi's Playground works at an entirely different scale. Players manipulate natural laws, change the likelihood of habitable worlds, introduce events such as supernovae and meteor strikes, and then run a galactic simulation to see what develops.

The useful thing about a jam is that neither idea needs to begin by proving it can sustain a 30-hour production.

There is also a dungeon crawler hidden inside a pub crawl

Bard Crawl, from Jared Mills, begins as an online co-op bar crawl for up to four friends before sliding into a fantasy dungeon adventure.

Other pitches cover intergalactic professional wrestling as a tactical deckbuilder, a multiplayer platform game where movement creates a melody, supernatural gardening and Brouroboros, a local party game in which competing players control different heads attached to a shared snake body.

Some will remain thirty-second pitches. Four will have to demonstrate that their central joke or mechanic can actually survive implementation.

Amnesia Fortnight has produced real games before

The process has a history beyond internal experimentation. Costume Quest, Iron Brigade and Stacking grew from Amnesia Fortnight work, while an earlier prototype called The Gods Must Be Hungry ultimately influenced the Compton's Cookoff world in Psychonauts 2.

The 2026 edition makes the commercial path explicit from the beginning.

The winning prototype is intended for further development under Double Fine Action Labs, a new publishing label focused on small and unusual games.

That makes scope part of the strategy. Instead of asking every experimental idea to justify a large production budget, Action Labs creates somewhere for a short, strange concept to remain short and strange.

This is also Double Fine figuring out independence again

Double Fine announced in July that it was becoming independent again after seven years with Xbox. The studio said the agreement also returned ownership of its games.

The Amnesia Fortnight Kickstarter followed only weeks later, with Double Fine openly framing crowdfunding as support for its newly independent future.

There is precedent. The studio has previously used crowdfunding around projects including Broken Age, Massive Chalice and Psychonauts 2.

2 Player Productions will document the 2026 jam while development streams expose much of the process in real time.

The first vote was scheduled to close on September 6, with four finalists due to be revealed shortly afterward. Prototype production begins September 9.
