Metro 2039 locks in February 4, and The Stranger is clearly not another Artyom

Metro 2039 now has a date, but February 4 is not the most interesting part of its latest reveal. 4A Games has finally shown an extended slice of console gameplay, and The Stranger approaches the series' familiar radiation, improvised weapons and ruined spaces with considerably less hesitation than its old protagonists.

The first console gameplay footage of Metro 2039 was shown during the September 3 State of Play, captured on PlayStation 5 Pro. It follows The Stranger shortly after he leaves the underground tunnels and enters the thawing ruins of post-apocalyptic Moscow.

He is a former Spartan soldier rather than a newcomer discovering the Metro. He escaped it once and swore not to return. By 2039, Hunter has unified the underground's former factions under the Novoreich, an authoritarian regime built around propaganda, fear and a promised war for the surface.

Survival still begins before the shooting

Radiation immediately becomes part of the new footage. The Stranger has to manage his equipment while moving through ruined apartment blocks where environmental hazards and enemies can overlap.

The weapons retain the physical, improvised character that has always separated Metro from cleaner military shooters. The Shatun rifle can be charged for lethal suppressed shots, while the Duplet shotgun is suited to much less delicate encounters.

4A also demonstrates environmental interaction during combat. Weak masonry can be destroyed to create an opening, and Molotov cocktails remain an effective answer when stealth has stopped being useful.

None of those systems is exotic on its own. Metro works when several of them become inconvenient at the same time.

The Stranger already knows how ugly this world can get

4A Games describes its new protagonist as a former elite Spartan who is both brutal and adaptable. His armor marks him as one of the Metro's old wolves, but the studio is deliberately resisting the idea that this makes him a conventional hero.

He is also the first fully voiced lead protagonist in the mainline series. His violent waking nightmares and history outside the Metro give 4A more room to define him directly during play rather than leaving most of his personality outside interactive scenes.

The return becomes more complicated because Hunter now sits at the center of the underground's political order. The former Spartan has consolidated the surviving factions into the Novoreich and is preparing the population for another conflict on the surface.

Back to Moscow without pretending Exodus never happened

Metro Exodus widened the series considerably. Metro 2039 is bringing the focus back toward Moscow and its tunnels, but the latest gameplay makes clear that the surface remains part of the journey.

4A continues to describe the game as a story-rich single-player FPS built around exploration, survival, combat and stealth. Its environments are being handcrafted rather than framed as a conventional open world.

The story is original and was developed in collaboration with Metro creator Dmitry Glukhovsky. It is not a direct adaptation of one specific novel.

February is no longer just a release window

Metro 2039 launches February 4, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC. Some territories, including parts of Asia, Australia and New Zealand, receive it on February 5.

Pre-orders will open later in 2026. 4A Games says more details about the story, gameplay and technical modes will arrive before release.
