Ubisoft is rebuilding Heroes III without evicting the community that kept it alive

The easiest version of a Heroes of Might and Magic III remake would preserve the campaigns and replace the pixels. Ubisoft is attempting something more awkward. Its new game leaves the original 2D renderer behind entirely while promising that community maps built across roughly 25 years will still have a place inside the remake.

A remake containing the whole old package

Ubisoft Chengdu and Ubisoft Shanghai are leading development, with Paris and Montpellier supporting the project. The 2027 release includes the original Heroes III content alongside Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death.

All nine factions are returning. So are the original campaigns, although Ubisoft is reorganizing them into a more continuous narrative and adding new cinematics, an introductory prologue and an epilogue.

The basic loop remains recognizable: explore the adventure map, gather resources and artifacts, develop towns, build armies and improve heroes before resolving battles through turn-based tactical combat.

The social feature from 1999 survived the modernization meeting

Hot Seat local multiplayer is returning.

Online play supports as many as eight players and adds improved matchmaking plus simultaneous turns. The latter is a practical modernization for a game in which waiting for several opponents to complete long adventure-map turns can become its own evening activity.

Ubisoft has also mentioned better planning and decision-making tools, although it has not yet described those systems in enough detail to judge how much they alter the original interface or rules.

Old maps are part of the launch plan, not an archival footnote

Ubisoft says thousands of community-made maps and campaigns from the previous 25 years will remain compatible with the remake from day one.

That promise is narrower than universal mod compatibility. There is no confirmation that every executable modification, community patch or tool created for older versions will carry across to Snowdrop.

The remake will instead provide updated editing tools and an in-game UGC hub for finding, downloading and sharing maps and campaigns.

How the legacy data is being translated has not been explained yet. Ubisoft has not published import specifications or documented which edge cases may fail.

The visual break with 1999 is much larger

Heroes III's fixed isometric 2D view is being replaced by a fully 3D world with free camera control. Ubisoft lists 4K presentation, dynamic lighting, real-time weather and changing seasons among the visual upgrades.

The audio pipeline is also being rebuilt around voice acting, layered music and new contextual cues for events including spellcasting, combat and morale changes.

PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are confirmed for 2027. There is no narrower release date yet.

The original Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete Edition was also released on Steam on August 25, the first time that complete version has been offered there.
