Bloodstained wants to be much larger, but its best new idea may be having two heroes on the same screen
Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement is not merely building a larger castle. ArtPlay is giving the player two heroes at once, allowing both to participate in combat while time itself changes the world around them. The new TGS trailer finally gives those ideas a clearer mechanical shape.
505 Games and ArtPlay presented a new Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement gameplay trailer during Tokyo Game Show 2026.
The game is now scheduled for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam following its delay from the original 2026 window.
Leo and Alex are more than two characters on a selection screen
The central new system remains the Buddy System. Leonard Brandon of the Church's Black Wolves and Alexander Kyteler of the Kingdom's White Stags travel and fight together.
One is directly controlled while the companion participates alongside them, with players able to switch control between the two.
ArtPlay is building traversal, traps and combat around that cooperation rather than simply doubling the number of available moves.
The largest Bloodstained map will not stay the same all day
The Scarlet Engagement is being described as the largest world in the series.
It cycles through dawn, day, dusk and night, with the changing time intended to affect how players interact with the environment rather than functioning as a simple lighting preset.
That has obvious potential in a Metroidvania. Previously explored spaces can remain mechanically relevant if time changes access, encounters or environmental behaviour.
Epiphany makes combat experimentation part of progression
The Epiphany Combat System allows Leo and Alex to discover new moves and abilities through battle.
ArtPlay has not yet fully explained every trigger behind those discoveries, but the intention is to make experimentation itself a source of character development instead of placing all progression inside equipment menus.
Two active protagonists also give the system considerably more room for complementary builds than Ritual of the Night had with Miriam alone.
Equipment now looks like equipment
Armour and clothing visibly change the heroes as well as modifying statistics.
Crafting and cooking also return, with side content and equipment systems used to strengthen the pair.
Those mechanics already existed in Ritual of the Night, but The Scarlet Engagement appears to be making customisation much more visually explicit.
The story goes backward before Ritual of the Night
The Scarlet Engagement explores an earlier chapter of Bloodstained history in 16th-century England.
A supernatural castle controlled by Demon Lord Elias has terrorised the kingdom, while repeated Church and royal expeditions have failed to destroy him. Alex survives one of those earlier attempts before fate brings him together with Leo.
ArtPlay says newcomers can follow the story without prior Bloodstained knowledge, while returning players will find deeper connections to the wider chronology.
The move to 2027 gives the dual-hero design more time
Koji Igarashi confirmed in August that development had entered its final stages while announcing the delay to 2027.
The TGS trailer makes the project significantly easier to understand, although there is still no exact release date or final PC specification.
The central challenge is now obvious. Ritual of the Night successfully modernised a familiar formula. The Scarlet Engagement has to prove that two heroes, a larger map and a dynamic world produce something more meaningful than simply a busier Metroidvania.
