Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun Boom is out on mobile, without ads or an energy meter in sight
The Boltgun now fits in a pocket. Nitro Games launched Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun Boom on September 23 through the App Store and Google Play in major markets, bringing the retro FPS series to touchscreens without turning its basic structure into a conventional energy-driven mobile game.
Malum Caedo is back fighting Chaos, only this time the battlefield is a phone. Boltgun Boom is a mobile adaptation of the shooter series originally developed by Auroch Digital for PC and consoles, with Nitro Games developing and publishing the new title under licence from Games Workshop.
Its business model is unusually straightforward for a contemporary mobile shooter. Boltgun Boom is free to try: the first three levels can be played at no charge, after which the full game can be unlocked through a one-time purchase. Nitro Games had already described that model in its first-half financial report before release.
No ads and no energy system
The Google Play listing explicitly promotes the absence of both advertising and energy mechanics. Optional in-app purchases are present, but the fundamental pitch is access to a premium-style campaign rather than repeated interruptions built around waiting for a resource to refill.
That matters particularly here because Boltgun's identity is based on momentum. Its combat draws on fast 1990s shooters, rewarding movement, aggression, exploration and overwhelming firepower.
The mobile version is being adapted rather than merely squeezed onto a phone
Nitro Games says its controls and gameplay systems have been optimized for mobile devices. The basic ingredients remain familiar: first-person combat, cultists, traitors and daemons, Warhammer 40,000 weaponry, hidden paths, secrets and large single-player campaigns.
The developer is therefore not pitching Boltgun Boom as a slower tactical reinterpretation of the series. The stated objective remains fast movement and continuous combat, with the interface rebuilt around mobile hardware.
When the project was revealed during Warhammer Skulls, Games Workshop said the mobile adaptation would begin with material from the Graia and Forges of Corruption campaigns. Nitro Games' launch description now refers more broadly to different chapters from the Boltgun series.
Boltgun Boom and Boltgun 2 are separate projects
The mobile release should not be confused with Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2. That sequel is a separate PC and console project, while Boltgun Boom is the dedicated iOS and Android adaptation.
The distinction explains why Nitro Games describes this as a rebuilt mobile experience rather than simply presenting it as the next mainline entry. It inherits Malum Caedo, the retro aesthetic and the relentless shooter structure associated with Boltgun while targeting a very different control surface.
Nitro Games says the game is now available through Apple's App Store and Google Play in all major markets. Google's current listing also confirms the three-level free trial followed by a one-time full-game unlock.
