Steam Has a Strange September 28 Lineup: Mechs, Cats and Cockroaches Included

September 28, 2026 does not need a major AAA launch to make Steam's upcoming section look crowded. The platform has accumulated a collection of indie projects whose pitches can become remarkably specific: capture a boss while an ARPG runs along the bottom of your desktop, organize 4,500 objects as a cat, exterminate cockroaches with friends, or decorate a Frutiger Aero home. There is one important qualification: several store pages still mark their games as unavailable at the time checked. September 28 is their scheduled date, not proof that every purchase button is already active.

The day starts with a lot of very specific niches

Steam's upcoming-release listings group an unusual collection of specialized indie games around September 28. Antivirus Survivors 2003 Professional turns a fake early-2000s computer into a bullet-heaven battlefield. Deskrawl: Idle ARPG places its action RPG along the bottom of the desktop, accumulating loot while captured enemies can become companions.

A few entries away, Sort of Magic asks up to four cats to put more than 4,500 objects back where they belong inside a magic school. Drop Command goes for mechs, tanks and VTOLs instead, combining direct vehicle control with tactical command and a strategic campaign layer.

HR: Human Remains takes another route entirely: after demons defeat humanity, survival includes keeping a job inside their corporation. Unshine Arcade, also dated September 28 on Steam, hides a top-down stealth-shooter roguelite inside an abandoned arcade.

Frutiger Home wants to put the 2000s back in your living room

Another game positioned around the same date is Frutiger Home, a cooperative decorating game from frutigerdev. It turns the Frutiger Aero aesthetic — luminous greens, water, blue skies, rounded interfaces and cheerful technological optimism — into a first-person interior-design sandbox.

Players select a house, furnish it with themed objects and can invite friends to decorate or simply spend time in the completed space. Both single-player and online co-op are listed. Its demo has been available since June and already allows players to decorate the Eco house, with saves intended to carry into the full game.

Steam's storefront presentation places it on September 28 in local listings, while platform data puts its unlock at September 29 at 01:00 UTC. That is exactly why a date in an upcoming list should not automatically be treated as simultaneous worldwide availability.

Bug extermination enters Early Access

Bug Cleaners is targeting Early Access. dicehit describes a cleaning game for solo players or teams of up to four, although its definition of cleaning is unusually broad: an assortment of tools is used against an infestation, and teammates are also free to make the group's job considerably less efficient.

Five maps are announced for the Early Access launch — Small House, Big House, Convenience Store & Laundromat, Parking Lot and Greenhouse — with ten planned for the finished version. Bug Cleaners had passed 20,000 wishlists when the team confirmed its September 28 launch target on September 24.

Yots mixes co-op, horror and roguelike systems

Yots Studio is also targeting the date with Yots, an action-horror game for one to four players. Participants become armed followers of a demonic entity and invade a supernatural City, collecting artifacts that feed into character builds.

Its Steam page combines action roguelike systems, third-person shooting, co-op and procedural generation. French is listed for the interface and subtitles. At the time checked, however, the store still described the game as unavailable ahead of its scheduled unlock.

Galaxy Critter Co. builds by day and shoots by night

Galaxy Critter Co. divides its loop cleanly in two: players build defenses during the day, then fight cockroach swarms at night in a combination of tower defense and top-down shooting. A run is designed to last between eight and fifteen days before its boss encounter.

Rat2 Studio advertises nine heroes and nine employee types, with roguelike progression built around stacking synergies. The game is single-player, and a demo is already downloadable. The full version remained scheduled to unlock later on September 28 when checked.

Camp Whittlewood would rather tell a story around the fire

The schedule also includes NickSchemes' Camp Whittlewood, a pixel-art horror adventure built around old-school RPG interactions. A scout trip to a former logging camp goes wrong when a story about a woodcarver stalking the grounds begins to look considerably less fictional.

The project describes itself as a short single-player adventure with key items, multiple endings and a group of campers with distinct personalities. English is currently the only listed language, and the Steam page checked still retains its upcoming status.

Even Steam is not a perfect clock

The crowded schedule also exposes a familiar problem with PC launch days. A displayed date does not represent an instantaneous global state across every region, and a developer can still encounter a problem after publicly announcing a precise launch time.

Japanese Ramen Simulator is the most immediate example. Wild Dog scheduled its Early Access release for September 28 at 9 AM JST, only to announce afterward that a delay in Steam's pre-release review process had prevented the launch. No replacement date or time had been confirmed when checked.

September 28 is therefore better read as a particularly busy release schedule than as a snapshot in which every listed game is already on sale. Antivirus Survivors 2003 Professional, Deskrawl, HR: Human Remains, Sort of Magic, Drop Command, Frutiger Home, Camp Whittlewood, Bug Cleaners, Yots and Galaxy Critter Co. all occupy this Steam release window. Actual availability still depends on each game's unlock time — and, occasionally, on the last obstacle between a finished build and the store button.
