Sword of the Sea comes to Switch 2 and Xbox Series on October 29
Sword of the Sea is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on October 29, 2026. The latest Nintendo Indie World presentation confirmed the new ports of Giant Squid's striking adventure about surfing across a desert to restore a lost ocean.
Surfing across a vast desert on a magical sword might sound unusual, but it is the central idea behind Sword of the Sea.
Giant Squid's atmospheric adventure first launched on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 19, 2025. It is now expanding to two additional console platforms.
During the October 28 Nintendo Indie World presentation, the developer and publisher Fictions confirmed a Nintendo Switch 2 release for October 29. An Xbox Series X|S version is also scheduled for the same day.
These are new platform releases of an existing game, rather than the original worldwide launch.
Restoring a forgotten ocean
Sword of the Sea follows the Wraith, a resurrected figure exploring a mysterious desert necropolis.
The world has lost its ocean. Enormous dunes dominate the landscape, ancient structures emerge from the sand, and traces of a forgotten civilization remain scattered throughout the environment.
The Wraith's journey involves gradually restoring water and bringing marine life back to these abandoned places.
As the adventure progresses, dry landscapes can become filled with turquoise waves, schools of fish and other sea creatures.
Exploration and environmental transformation form the heart of the experience, rather than complex character statistics or conventional role-playing systems.
The Hoversword changes how movement works
The game's defining mechanic is the Hoversword, a magical blade used like a board for surfing across the landscape.
Its movement system combines ideas from surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding.
Players build momentum by descending slopes, maintain speed across flowing terrain and launch themselves into the air from the crests of enormous sand waves.
Flips, spins and grabs can be performed during jumps, with ramps, halfpipes and walls extending the possibilities for traversal.

Rather than treating movement as the distance between objectives, Sword of the Sea makes it one of the primary pleasures of play.
Giant Squid describes the experience as a combination of energetic action and meditative exploration.
The new Switch 2 edition has not been announced with additional movement mechanics or exclusive stages, so its main confirmed distinction is platform availability.
A varied world shaped around motion
The environments extend beyond traditional desert scenery.
Players travel through frozen mountains, ruins, monumental temples and locations shaped by the remnants of the lost ocean.
Ancient chains, ramps and suspended paths provide opportunities for traversal and tricks.

Restoring water gradually transforms these places, allowing marine life to return to environments that previously appeared barren.
The game also includes threatening creatures such as enormous leviathans, although its main focus remains exploration and the sensation of movement.
A creative team with a distinctive history
Sword of the Sea was developed by Giant Squid, the studio behind ABZÛ and The Pathless.
Creative director Matt Nava previously worked on Journey, while composer Austin Wintory provides the soundtrack.
Their previous collaborations established a recognizable approach to environmental storytelling through music, color and movement.
Sword of the Sea continues that tradition while introducing a different traversal system built around the Hoversword.
Switch 2 features and supported languages
Nintendo confirms handheld, tabletop and TV play for the Switch 2 edition.
HDR output is supported on compatible displays, and the game includes French among its available languages.
The Nintendo eShop lists an estimated download size of 9.2GB.
Sword of the Sea is a single-player experience. Cloud save support is also listed under Nintendo Switch Online's applicable features.
The official store information does not provide detailed frame-rate targets, internal resolutions or direct performance comparisons against the PS5 edition.
Sword of the Sea launches on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on October 29, 2026, joining the existing PS5 and PC versions.
