Dragon Quest Monsters is speeding up recruitment with Quick Scouting

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is taking a surprisingly direct swing at one of monster collecting’s most repetitive steps. Square Enix has detailed Quick Scouting, which can recruit creatures straight from the field, alongside a dedicated Scout Run and large-scale Joint Battles where Bianca and Nera command two parties at once.

Dragon Quest Monsters is speeding up recruitment with Quick Scouting

Quick Scouting cuts the battle screen out of recruitment

Traditional scouting still exists. Players can encounter a wild monster, enter battle and use Show of Force to try to recruit it. Quick Scouting simply adds another route: target a creature in the field, throw it some meat, and the current party can perform a Show of Force without starting a normal fight.

Better cuts of meat improve the chances of convincing a monster, and Square Enix says some species have unusual preferences. A successful recruit immediately moves into the active party or reserves when room is available, otherwise it is sent to the monster depot.

For a game built around collecting, raising and repeatedly synthesizing monsters, cutting even a small encounter out of that loop could add up quickly. Hunting one missing ingredient for a synthesis chain is rather different from fighting because the fight itself is interesting.

Scout Run makes the shortcut part of progression

Quick Scouting is not limited to conveniently grabbing common field monsters. Later in the adventure, the Witherwood paddock opens a Scout Run containing rare creatures that cannot normally be found in the wild. Those monsters can only be recruited there through Quick Scouting.

Players receive a quota of Scouty Snacks when entering and choose which monsters to target with them. More creatures are scheduled to appear as the story advances, giving the paddock a reason to remain part of the regular collection loop.

That quota is important. A mechanic designed to remove friction immediately gains its own resource decision once rare monsters become involved. Quick Scouting may be faster, but Scout Run makes spending that convenience part of the strategy.

Joint Battles turn the reserve party into an actual party

Large monsters introduce a different system. In story-based Joint Battles, Bianca and Nera fight at the same time with two groups of monsters. When Bianca is the selected protagonist she commands the main party and Nera handles the reserves; selecting Nera reverses those roles.

Each party uses shared HP and MP gauges across its monsters, while the reserve group can still receive orders through the Tactics system. Monsters that would normally sit outside the active four therefore become part of the encounter rather than spare pieces waiting for a substitution.

Massive enemies also have individual Pet Hates. Performing actions they particularly dislike fills a Rage Gauge, eventually triggering stronger attacks. Once that angry phase burns out, the monster becomes exhausted and temporarily unable to move.

Joint Battles will later extend beyond story encounters. The battle arena includes versions that reward players for winning before the end of round ten, while Online Joint Battles support groups of up to four players against massive monsters.

Witherwood gets another mystery and three more monsters

The new material also introduces Almira, voiced in English by Grace Saif. She served as Witherwood’s guardian and tended the two Archeagles that once protected the kingdom. After the Evil Eye appeared, the Archeagles vanished and Almira disappeared as well. Lucifus, one of those former protectors, subsequently began attacking the people of Witherwood.

Square Enix also revealed Hammerhood honcho, a beast-family monster wielding an oversized mallet; See slug, a nature-family creature whose Bottom Feeder Talent teaches water-elemental abilities; and Panda pilgrim, a beast-family fighter carrying a sharpened walking stick.

The demo is live, but only part of its progress carries forward

The free demo is already available on the game’s launch platforms and runs from the beginning of the story through the initial Witherwood events. Recruitment, Quick Scouting and Synthesis are among the systems available to try.

Keeping the demo save does not mean continuing the entire save file in December. Up to eight rank G and F monsters from the main party and reserves can be transferred into the full game. They become available through the depot once it is unlocked, but return at level 1 with their default Talents and abilities.

Demo players can also claim the Wrangler’s Bundle in the full release, containing one Ring of Impulse, one Bonus Ball and five Smoked Sirloins. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is scheduled for December 3, 2026 on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
