DLSS 5 gives studios control over the AI, but the frame-rate bill is still steep

NVIDIA has detailed the creative controls behind DLSS 5 for game developers. Its 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is an additional stage that adjusts lighting and materials after the engine has rendered the scene. NBA 2K27 can look noticeably richer in character close-ups, but independent measurements make clear that the visual uplift is not free.

This is not another upscaler

The DLSS name makes the distinction easy to miss. Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image, Frame Generation creates intermediate frames and Ray Reconstruction targets ray-traced effects. DLSS 5's 3D-Guided Neural Rendering operates somewhere else: NVIDIA positions it at the end of the graphics pipeline, enhancing an image the engine has already rendered.

The game frame therefore remains the foundation. The model takes information including color and motion vectors and uses engine data to alter the appearance of lighting and materials. In NBA 2K27, it appears as a separate toggle called “DLSS Neural Rendering” and can be enabled independently of the other DLSS options.

That distinction matters for players. DLSS 5 is not asking a model to invent the scene from a prompt. It begins with geometry, textures and lighting already authored by the game and adds another neural rendering stage on top.

Visual Concepts can decide where the effect is allowed to intervene

NVIDIA's September 22 developer update focuses heavily on artistic control. Developers receive structure and tone controls, semantic AI masking and masks supplied directly by the engine. The neural effect can be strengthened in one part of the image and restrained in another.

Visual Concepts uses those controls in NBA 2K27 to preserve scanned facial geometry while changing details such as skin subsurface scattering, light transmission through ears and hair, and contact shadows. A per-pixel uplift mask lets the studio target the areas where it actually wants additional processing.

That may be the most important part of the implementation. A technology that alters the final image is much harder to justify if the artists cannot tell it when to stop. NVIDIA is trying to make the neural model behave like a direction tool rather than an automatic “make it realistic” filter.

The visual improvement has a very real compute cost

Independent testing quickly complicates the idea of a free fidelity upgrade. Tom's Hardware measured performance losses frequently exceeding 50 percent on lower RTX 50-series GPUs with the neural pass enabled. It nevertheless found that most Blackwell cards in its test could approach 60 fps at 1080p.

PC Gamer recorded a drop of as much as 73 percent in one RTX 5080 configuration. That number is not universal: resolution, graphics settings, Super Resolution and Frame Generation substantially change the result. It does show how demanding this first production model can be.

The feature is optional. NBA 2K's own support guidance explicitly suggests disabling Neural Rendering if the performance loss harms the experience. That is less exciting than the idea of effortless photorealism, but it is a much more useful PC graphics option.

RTX 50 now, RTX 40 later

Official support currently covers GeForce RTX 50-series desktop and laptop GPUs. GeForce NOW Ultimate can also expose the feature when a session runs on NVIDIA-operated RTX 5080-class hardware.

NVIDIA told Tom's Hardware that it intends to continue tuning RTX 50 performance first and then work on official RTX 40-series support. No precise release date has been announced for that expansion.

DLSS 5 is therefore a shipping technology without yet looking like a finished destination. NBA 2K27 demonstrates that a developer can use it selectively rather than simply turning an AI effect up to maximum. Performance remains the less glamorous reminder that every neural lighting improvement still has to be computed somewhere.
