Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown is out now with ships, underwater exploration, romance and new quests
The shores of Pywel are no longer the limit of exploration. Released on October 29, 2026, Charting the Unknown expands Crimson Desert Enhanced with sailing, diving, new story quests, romance and more extensive building and management systems.
Until now, most of Crimson Desert's adventures took place on the landmass of Pywel.
With Charting the Unknown, players can move beyond its coastline and explore new islands and underwater environments.
Pearl Abyss launched the game's first paid expansion on October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Mac, subject to regional and storefront availability.
The expansion was originally scheduled for October 15 before being delayed by two weeks.
The developer said the additional time would allow for more polishing and stability improvements.
Its release is accompanied by Patch 2.04.00, which details the extensive new features.
Three new stories for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane
Charting the Unknown continues the journeys of Crimson Desert Enhanced's three principal playable characters.
Kliff, Oongka and Damiane each receive an individual story quest.
These narratives take place after the events of the main campaign and explore what the characters do after the original adventure concludes.
Pearl Abyss describes new threats involving a mysterious presence in the desert, political conflicts and ancient secrets.
The three individual quests become available after completing the main story quest Journey's End.
They can then be started through the Journal menu.
That requirement matters for players who have not finished the base game.
The expansion does not provide immediate access to all of its narrative content from the beginning of a new playthrough.
Other features, including maritime exploration, follow different progression requirements.
Sailing to uncharted islands
Ocean exploration is one of the expansion's most significant additions.
Players can command ships and travel across the Great Ocean surrounding Pywel.
These voyages lead to new islands, treasure-hunting opportunities and additional missions.

Ships are introduced as a new category of mount.
Players can obtain them through dedicated shipbuilding dispatch missions or purchase vessels from fleetmasters.
Additional parts allow ships to be customized.
Merchants in locations including Demeniss and Delesyia sell equipment used for those modifications.
The system also introduces maritime trade.
Ships can transport newly added trading goods, creating another economic activity alongside traditional exploration.
The ocean-focused quest A Wider World becomes available after the player has reached Howling Hill and sufficiently developed the Greymane camp.
Access to the complete naval systems therefore depends on progression rather than being universally unlocked from the start.
Discovering the world beneath the waves
The expansion also introduces underwater exploration.
Kliff, Oongka and Damiane can dive to discover submerged ruins, treasure chests and hidden locations.
Diving itself does not require completion of the full campaign.
However, a new breath gauge limits how long characters can remain underwater.

Players must prepare for extended expeditions, particularly when exploring areas far from the surface.
Diving suits can be improved to increase maximum breath capacity.
Special food items can temporarily restore available air.
Pearl Abyss also introduces equipment that allows certain A.T.A.G functions to operate underwater.
Together, these systems turn underwater exploration into an activity involving equipment choices and resource management.
New underwater mounts
Pywel's oceans contain new creatures that can be encountered and, in certain cases, used as mounts.
Depending on the species, players can subdue or feed them to increase their Trust.
Once sufficient Trust has been established, eligible creatures can be registered as mounts.

Promotional footage has shown spectacular encounters with large marine animals.
The feature adds further transportation options to the new underwater environments.
However, the official notes do not establish that every underwater creature can be tamed.
Eligibility depends on the specific species and its mechanics.
Romance and marriage come to Pywel
Charting the Unknown expands the relationships players can develop with inhabitants of Pywel.
Kliff, Oongka and Damiane can interact with certain non-player characters through conversations, gifts and additional social options.
Building enough Trust may eventually lead to a romantic relationship.
Eligible characters can then be asked to marry the protagonist.
Romantic interactions have daily progression limits.
Developing a relationship with one playable character can also influence the Trust available to the others.
Marriage introduces further interactions, including travelling with a spouse and receiving occasional gifts.
The system also allows relationships to end, with certain consequences.
Not every NPC is a romance candidate, and some characters require specific conditions to be met.
More freedom to build and customize homes
Housing receives a substantial expansion.
The existing system focused primarily on decorating established spaces.
Charting the Unknown introduces greater control over structural elements.
Players can organize interior layouts and adjust elements such as walls, windows and other architectural features.
This provides more opportunities to create personalized living spaces.
The advanced system requires certain progression milestones, including establishing the Greymane camp at Howling Hill and completing Luke's related quest.
Patch 2.04.00 also introduces seventeen additional residences.
Some residences can serve as homes for spouses following marriage.
Managing castles, businesses and festivals
The expansion also develops the management systems associated with territories and settlements.
Certain castles can be claimed after players meet the relevant liberation requirements.
Their courtyards and interiors can then be furnished and customized.
A new business management feature allows players to rent and operate commercial facilities.
Available categories include restaurants, sawmills, smithies and tailor shops.
Businesses continue operating while the player explores other regions.
Special visitors may also appear at managed locations.
The Greymane camp gains the ability to host temporary festivals.
Characters with sufficiently developed relationships can attend these gatherings.
Some visitors may become Honorary Greymanes, allowing them to participate in certain dispatch activities.
Garden of Trials adds boss challenges
Players seeking additional combat content can access Garden of Trials.
This new activity features consecutive battles against bosses previously encountered during the adventure.
Completing the challenges provides additional rewards.
Access requires completion of the main story.
It is therefore designed primarily for players who have already progressed through the original campaign.
Where is Charting the Unknown available?
Charting the Unknown launched on October 29, 2026, across the main Crimson Desert Enhanced platforms.
The expansion is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Pearl Abyss also confirms Mac availability, although the timing of the Mac App Store update may differ.
Steam users on Mac must download the full game package again due to technical changes included in the update.
The DLC is a paid purchase requiring the base game.
Pearl Abyss recommends updating to the latest version before accessing the additional content.
Regional restrictions may apply to the expansion's commercial availability.
Xbox players also have access to a five-hour trial of Crimson Desert Enhanced through January 7, 2027.
That trial does not mean the Charting the Unknown DLC itself is being distributed for free.
With its first paid expansion, Crimson Desert significantly broadens the activities available across Pywel. Ocean travel, diving, personal storylines, romance and management systems add new possibilities to an open-world adventure that previously focused primarily on exploration across land.
