Samson Developer Liquid Swords Goes Bankrupt Six Months After Launch, Game Rights Put Up for Sale
Samson developer Liquid Swords has reached a serious turning point. The Swedish studio founded by Christofer Sundberg in 2020 was declared bankrupt by the Stockholm District Court on October 12, 2026. The decision, confirmed by the law firm administering the proceedings and widely reported internationally over the weekend, comes approximately six months after the company's debut game launched. Around 30 employees are affected, while the rights associated with Samson are being offered for sale.
Liquid Swords was supposed to represent a new beginning. After helping build Avalanche Studios' reputation through the Just Cause franchise, Christofer Sundberg founded his own development company in 2020.
The ambition was to bring experienced developers together around distinctive action games.
Six years later, the company has reached bankruptcy.
Liquid Swords AB was formally declared bankrupt by the Stockholm District Court. The situation is confirmed by Cirio, the Swedish law firm overseeing the proceedings.
This is not simply a rumor concerning possible closure. The administrator has published the court decision's date and details of the sale process.
Bankruptcy Was Declared on October 12
The timeline is important.
The Stockholm court made its decision on October 12, 2026. Cirio published its announcement on October 14.
Swedish business outlet Breakit had already reported serious financial problems days earlier, with international gaming publications following the story on October 17 and 18.
Lawyer Karl Björlin of Cirio was appointed bankruptcy administrator.
His responsibilities include handling the company's assets and organizing the sale process.
The bankruptcy itself is established, although its eventual consequences remain uncertain.
Employees Had Reportedly Gone Unpaid for Months
The most immediate concern involves Liquid Swords' workforce.
According to investigations published by Breakit on October 9 and 15, employees had experienced unpaid wages for several months.
The publication reported that members of staff sought bankruptcy proceedings over their unpaid compensation.
Approximately 30 employees were affected when the company entered bankruptcy.
Swedish reports also describe the involvement of the country's state wage-guarantee system.
That mechanism can cover eligible employment claims when an employer becomes insolvent.
However, its involvement does not establish that every affected employee has already received full payment.
The employees' longer-term employment prospects remain unclear. Selling company assets does not automatically mean that all jobs will be preserved.
Samson Was Liquid Swords' Debut Game
The studio's only released game is Samson, also known as Samson: A Tyndalston Story.
Launched on PC on April 8, 2026, it is a third-person action game set in a fictional city dominated by crime and local rivalries.
Players control Samson McCray, who returns to Tyndalston facing a growing debt while criminal figures threaten his sister.
The gameplay combines close-quarters fighting, urban exploration and aggressive driving.
Vehicles can become weapons, while missions and time constraints force players to consider the consequences of their decisions.

Liquid Swords promoted the game as a focused action experience rather than a direct attempt to reproduce Grand Theft Auto on the same scale.
Its grim industrial environments and physical combat were central to that identity.
A Mixed Reception and Technical Problems
Samson's launch did not receive consistently positive reviews.
Critics reported bugs, technical problems and several mechanics that failed to fulfill their potential.
Steam user reviews were still classified as Mixed when checked for this article.
However, reception was not universally negative. Some players praised the atmosphere, combat and smaller-scale approach to urban action.
Christofer Sundberg publicly acknowledged the game's launch problems while expressing pride in his team's work.
Further updates followed, and console versions launched in September.
Nevertheless, the company did not avoid its financial crisis.
It would be misleading to attribute bankruptcy exclusively to review scores. The available evidence establishes cash-flow difficulties and unpaid wages, but does not include a full financial statement detailing every cause of insolvency.
The Studio Had Already Made Layoffs in 2025
Liquid Swords' problems began well before the game's release.
In February 2025, the company announced layoffs.
Sundberg described the situation as deeply regrettable and indicated that the studio had no choice but to reduce staffing.
Those reductions occurred more than a year before Samson reached PC.
The October 2026 bankruptcy therefore follows an extended period of financial pressure rather than a crisis that began with the game's reviews.
Samson's Intellectual Property Is for Sale
There is an important distinction between the future of the company and the future of its game.
Cirio states that Liquid Swords' principal assets consist of intellectual property rights associated with Samson.
The assets and business are being offered for sale through the bankruptcy process.
Interested parties can submit indicative bids to the administrator.
The published deadline is October 21, 2026, at noon.
As of this article's preparation, no final buyer has been confirmed.
Seeking an acquisition is not the same as having completed one.

Will Samson Disappear From Digital Stores?
That is likely to be one of the first questions from existing players.
No official source examined for this report confirms that Samson is being permanently removed from digital distribution.
Its Steam listing remains accessible.
Bankruptcy does not automatically result in the immediate disappearance of a game that has already been released.
However, the future of updates and support is uncertain.
Further patches, continued distribution and any future content will depend on decisions made during the proceedings and the outcome of the rights sale.
There is currently no verified basis for announcing an imminent delisting, a shutdown of game services or cancellation of every potential future project.
Could a Buyer Revive Samson?
A sale of the assets creates possibilities, but does not guarantee a particular outcome.
A buyer might choose to continue distributing Samson, finance additional improvements or develop new projects based on the property.
It could also acquire selected rights without continuing the development studio in its original form.
Any result would depend on the transaction's scope, the buyer and subsequent commercial decisions.
For employees, a buyer would not necessarily guarantee reinstatement.
For players, the game has a possible future, but its direction remains unknown.
An Ambitious Independent Studio Reaches Its End in Its Current Form
Liquid Swords recruited experienced developers with backgrounds at studios including DICE, Rockstar, Starbreeze and Avalanche, according to Cirio.
Its goal was to apply that experience to a distinctive project without simply adopting the scale of the largest productions.
Unlike studios that close before shipping anything, Liquid Swords succeeded in bringing its debut game to market.
But release alone did not secure the company's financial survival.
The October 12 court decision is now definitive. The next important date is October 21, when indicative offers for the assets are due.
Liquid Swords has reached the end of its current business structure. Samson's future, meanwhile, remains undecided and increasingly depends on who, if anyone, acquires the rights.
