Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave launches today and refuses to lock you into a single route

The new Fire Emblem arrives on Switch 2 with a useful answer to one of Three Houses' most permanent decisions. Picking Cai, Dietrich, Theodora or Leda does not shut the other stories away. Fortune's Weave lets players move between all four routes before those journeys eventually combine into a single force.

Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave launches September 17, 2026 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. Intelligent Systems is keeping the series' turn-based tactical foundation while building a much freer RPG structure around it.

The story takes place on Dagda, a continent south of Fódlan. It shares a world with Fire Emblem: Three Houses, although Nintendo says the new game was designed to stand on its own.

Four perspectives without four completely separate campaigns

Cai, Dietrich, Theodora and Leda each have an individual path. Players can start with any of them and switch to another route whenever a different character or event becomes more interesting.

There is no permanent house-style commitment at the beginning. The four stories approach shared events from different perspectives before converging later in the campaign.

The development team originally considered eight protagonists before reducing the idea to four in order to keep the overall structure manageable.

Each route has its own gameplay identity

Cai can capture animals, care for them, use them as mounts and work fields for trade. Dietrich learns Combat Arts by defeating enemies and can strengthen those techniques.

Theodora recruits soldiers from settlements and deploys them as battalions. Leda performs in taverns, earning rewards and occasionally information about hidden locations.

Those systems gradually begin to overlap as progress made in one route unlocks possibilities elsewhere.

Dagda opens Fire Emblem beyond a single central hub

Dagsion remains an important preparation space between Heroic Games matches, but players can also leave the capital and travel across Dagda.

Quests, resources, roaming enemies and dungeons sit across the world map. Dungeon exploration returns from Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, now placed inside a considerably larger RPG structure.

Time still matters, so exploring every available location is a choice rather than a requirement.

The Heroic Games feed directly into the tactical systems

The first half of the story centres on a tournament in Dagsion where warriors compete for a wish granted to the victor.

Matches can introduce special rules and terrain conditions. Outside the arena, players recruit allies, improve Blessings at temples, train skills and develop relationships.

Heroes also gain Blaze Arts, powerful signature moves that cost HP. Using them fills a Blaze Gauge. Reaching the midpoint grants a bonus, but filling the gauge entirely triggers Burst and cuts that hero's maximum HP in half.

One save file does not mean one irreversible timeline

Fortune's Weave uses a single main save file because progress is shared across its interconnected routes.

Intelligent Systems compensates by automatically preserving the beginning of every chapter for each protagonist. Players can return to those checkpoints and replay events without managing a stack of separate campaign saves.

The mechanic also fits the story. Fortuna, the Goddess of Fate, allows the player character to travel into the past and build on previous attempts to prevent the future destruction caused by the demon god Balor.

Switch 2 even adds mouse controls

Fortune's Weave supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for players who want to navigate the tactical RPG that way.

The developers also say Switch 2's additional graphical capability allowed the team to use more detailed character designs, clothing and environments than in earlier entries.

Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is available now on Nintendo Switch 2.
