Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold launches February 23, 2027 as Square Enix reveals Zephyr and major new features
Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold finally has a confirmed release date. During the Tokyo Fan Festival on October 31, 2026, Square Enix announced that the next expansion will launch on February 23, 2027, with early access beginning February 19. The event also introduced Zephyr, a new ranged DPS job accompanied by a winged familiar.
Warriors of Light will need to wait a little longer before exploring the frozen landscapes of Evercold.
Square Enix used its Tokyo Fan Festival to confirm the expansion's release schedule and reveal several major additions.
Producer and director Naoki Yoshida announced February 23, 2027, as the official launch date for Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold.
The expansion was previously expected in January, meaning the new date represents a delay of several weeks.
Preorders will begin November 4, 2026, while eligible players can enter early access on February 19.
Evercold moves from January to February 23
During the Berlin Fan Festival in July 2026, Square Enix had targeted January 2027 for the expansion's release.
The developer has now moved that schedule to February 23.
The additional weeks provide more development time before the expansion arrives.
During the Tokyo presentation, Yoshida explained that the team had considered maintaining its original window before choosing a slightly longer development period.
Evercold represents an important step for Final Fantasy XIV.
Following Dawntrail, Square Enix intends to begin another major narrative arc while introducing substantial changes to existing gameplay systems.
The release calendar now has three important dates: preorders on November 4, early access on February 19 and the general release on February 23.
Early access should not be confused with the official launch date.
Zephyr is a new physical ranged DPS
The biggest character reveal at the Tokyo Fan Festival was the expansion's second new job.
Known as Zephyr, it belongs to the physical ranged DPS category.
Its primary weapon is a crossbow.
The job also fights alongside Nephele, a winged companion that supports its attacks.
Square Enix released a dedicated trailer showing the relationship between the character and the familiar during combat.
That partnership is one of Zephyr's defining features.
Rather than simply adding another ranged fighter, the developers are introducing a job whose identity depends partly on coordinating with an avian ally.
However, Square Enix has not yet published the complete action list, cooldown structure or every interaction with other jobs.
Its final balance may also change before launch.
Two jobs join the expansion
Zephyr joins Bastion, which was introduced during the Berlin Fan Festival several months earlier.
Unlike the new ranged damage dealer, Bastion is designed as a tank.
Its signature weapons are two large shields known as skyltborg.
That unusual equipment gives Bastion a distinctive appearance compared with traditional tanks using swords, axes or polearms.
Evercold therefore adds two complementary roles.
One specializes in protecting the party and absorbing enemy attacks, while the other focuses on dealing physical damage from a distance.
Both also form part of the expansion's broader combat system changes.
Evolved Combat Mode aims to refresh battles
Square Enix is preparing a new combat option called Evolved Combat Mode.
The announced objective is to place greater emphasis on the unique identity of each playable job.
It is intended to provide another way of experiencing combat as the Warrior of Light.
However, the entire system has not yet been demonstrated in its final form.
The feature is particularly significant for an MMORPG where players may spend hundreds of hours mastering their rotations and ability timings.
Changing how those actions work can affect established habits, difficult encounters and the learning process for different roles.
Square Enix will therefore need to explain exactly how Evolved differs from the existing combat system.
The announcements clarify the developer's goals without yet establishing how successful the changes will be in high-end content.
A new adventure in the Fourth
Evercold takes players to new regions of the Fourth, a world trapped in perpetual winter.
The setting forms part of a new major storyline.
Early promotional materials feature frozen landscapes, monumental architecture and environments distinct from those visited in previous expansions.

Square Enix promises additional explorable areas and new dungeons.
The October presentation builds upon information previously revealed in spring and during the European Fan Festival.
These destinations will provide the setting for new main quests, exploration and encounters.
The developer has not yet disclosed every detail of the story.
Final Fantasy VII Remake joins the raids
Evercold will introduce a new raid series titled Beyond the Lifestream.
The project is a crossover with the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.
Square Enix revealed new artwork by Tetsuya Nomura, creative director of the Remake series, during the Tokyo event.
The collaboration brings together two major branches of the Final Fantasy franchise within Final Fantasy XIV.
However, the precise encounters, mechanics and complete raid structure remain undisclosed.
It would be premature to assume that particular characters will become playable or that specific bosses will appear without official confirmation.
The crossover is confirmed, while much of its content remains to be revealed.
Fierce difficulty sits between Normal and Savage
Square Enix also announced a new raid difficulty option.
Called Fierce, it will sit between the existing Normal and Savage difficulties.
The goal is to introduce another step for players seeking increasingly challenging encounters.
This additional category could help groups that find Normal too accessible but are not yet ready for Savage.
The specific rewards, entry requirements and mechanics associated with Fierce have not been fully detailed.
The presentation also confirmed challenging eight-player battles featuring reworked bosses from alliance raids.
Both additions are designed to expand the range of demanding encounters rather than replace existing content.
Seasonal rewards will change progression
The developer is preparing another important change to its reward systems.
Evercold will introduce Seasons, a framework intended to give players greater flexibility in how they obtain certain rewards.
Square Enix describes the system as a meaningful adjustment to reward progression.
However, further explanations are needed before its effects on established gameplay routines can be evaluated.
The word Season alone should not be interpreted as confirmation of a paid battle pass.
The official announcement describes seasonal rewards without establishing a new paid subscription tied to that feature.
Character creation, housing and companions
Combat is not the only area receiving attention.
Square Enix plans to expand character creation and introduce additional customization options.
Character Action Skins will offer new ways to express a character's personality through action-related presentation.
Housing features will also continue evolving.
The developers are preparing PvP updates and a revised companion chocobo system.
Some of these changes are scheduled to begin arriving with patch 8.1.
That means they should not all be assumed available on February 23.
Another look at the Evangelion crossover
The collaboration between Final Fantasy XIV and Evangelion also received an updated presentation.
Square Enix showed a new trailer for Ghosts of Desire, a project combining both fictional universes.
The announcement comes as Evercold prepares several major collaborations with other Japanese entertainment properties.
The trailer reveals additional visual material, but it does not establish every reward or access requirement.
Further details will follow according to Square Enix's update schedule.
Preorders open November 4
Players will be able to preorder Evercold beginning Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
Square Enix lists the opening time as 9:00 a.m. GMT.
A limited Collector's Bundle will be available through the publisher's official store.
It combines a physical Collector's Box and a code for the Digital Collector's Edition on Windows or Mac.
Players on other supported platforms can purchase the physical box separately and preorder the appropriate digital edition through their storefront.
However, the standalone Collector's Box does not include the expansion or digital bonuses.
These different purchase options should therefore not be treated as equivalent packages.
More than 35 million registered accounts
Square Enix used the Fan Festival to announce a new milestone for Final Fantasy XIV.
The MMORPG has surpassed 35 million registered accounts worldwide.
That total reflects the audience accumulated throughout the game's history.
It is not a measure of current concurrent players or active subscribers.
The number includes accounts registered over multiple years and should be understood as a historical indicator of the game's reach.
Square Enix continues to develop an MMORPG that has remained active for more than a decade.
The next major chapter arrives in February
Evercold will be the sixth major expansion for Final Fantasy XIV.
It is intended to open a new narrative chapter while changing several established gameplay systems.
The Tokyo presentation establishes the new release schedule and reveals the central features of its two additional jobs.
Important questions remain, particularly around the detailed operation of Evolved Combat Mode, seasonal progression and the structure of the new raids.
Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is scheduled for February 23, 2027, with early access beginning February 19.
Before then, Square Enix will need to explain how its different systems fit together in an expansion that aims to do more than introduce another region to explore.
