Custom Seas already let Sea of Thieves players rearrange a surprising amount of Rare's pirate sandbox. The August 20 update hands over a few more switches, and they are exactly the sort of switches that become useful once people stop merely sailing and start inventing their own games.
Sea of Thieves still does not rely on dramatic stat progression or an endless ladder of stronger gear. Rare spent years expanding its original idea instead: excellent ships, simple interacting systems and unpredictable players capable of turning an ordinary treasure hunt into a memorable disaster.
